Discussion: Can talent be inherited?

Some people say the ability to sing, dance, draw, etc. is acquired, not inherited. But you know what they say: Some people got it and some people don't. How does one gain their individual talents? One might argue that you become good at something by practice, but there are small children with little to no training who sing beautifully, dance very well, draw very well, etc. Most children of musicians and actors are found to be talented like their parents. Then again, I can sing, dance and draw but my parents can't do any of that for ****. I was singing and drawing when I was little and had never been in a choir or to a drawing class in my life. It just came to me naturally. One might argue that being born with stronger lungs or longer legs and arms could give one an advantage.

CAN talent be inherited?

Yes it can. If you're mother is very artistic, then there is a chance you will be too. I'm proof. My mum is great at languages (did french well at school, I didn't even know till recently) and played the violin. I do spanish very well and when learning melodies at drama and playing piano, I was told I have a very good sense of musicality and can pick up a rhythm very quickly. I'm also very very articulate like my father (that's quite enviromental though.

Whitney and Miss Cissy are proof too. But you need to hone the raw/natural talent you have though.

But Tina and Matthew can't sing or dance. Beyonce has been singing and dancing since before she had been formally trained.

yea i dont think talent is inherited but there are talents you are born with. Well like, xtina for example is has a naturally gifted voice which normally leads to being a better vocalist, however someone with less range/ less power etc can still become a better vocalist with practice. IE. Beyonce being a better vocalist than her

It's probably not inherited genetically per se; however, you're more likely to be surrounded by these activities as a child because of your parents, making you more inclined to try them out. The more you try them out, the better you become.

It's kind of a toss-up that I don't think can really be proven either way, though.

I do believe you inherit talent. My Mom used to paint a lot in her youth and she also owned a Video Company. I most definitely inherited my Mom's artistic side in the video area because she's seen my video-editing and she thinks I'm really good and she said I had her abilities. I'm actually getting paid right now to put together a montage video for my friend who is applying for a scholarship.

In addition, I've always been able to carry a tune and be a decent tenor, and I did choir for 2 years in High School so my voice has improved so much and is much better. Both of my parents did at least some choir singing in high school. My Mom was an alto, not sure about my dad.

So yeah, I definitely think it's inherited.

For athletics and dancing I think it's at least partly inherited.

Flexibility is inherited but to retain it constant practice is a MUST. I did gymnastics for a few years because I'm really flexible. Despite this I can barely bench press 30kg

My brother however is pretty large and not fast and flexible but can easily bench 90kg. It's partly good genetics but practice is a must.

So yes it's inherited, but to tap into it's potential then training is needed.

James Cameron's mother is/was an artist and his father is/was a scientist. James Cameron is an artist, movie director, dabbles in science, and he's an iventor. He worked for it, but growing up with talent also helped him out.

My dad is an artist and is great with his hands. He builds lots of **** like, computers, model helicoptors, model cars, model boats and they all run (he even builds the remotes). He draws a lot as well.

Me, I'm great with words. I can write all kinds of things.

When it comes to being athletic, my dad's fast and I'm fast. I ran track and I was great at it for the two years I ran it.

Influence seems to be the main thing. If you grow up in an environment full of singers/artists/etc then you're more likely to go that route.

When it comes to athletics it is probably inherited.

My parents are neither. I just had a lot of albums in my house and I had a CD player.

But I guess that would be supporting what you just said.

No. Everything about this comment is wrong.

Of course talent is inherited to a certain degree. Everyone is, but there are the select few that are bron with inherent advantages like slightly longer fingers, which is perfect for a future pianist or perfect pitch, which is perfect for an musician. But talent is nothing without practice. You have to hone your god given talent with hours of practice to get to the top.
