For albums yes but for digital tracks took over there a long time ago, even though physical singles still can do well. It's just that Oricon only counts physical sales which are more fanbase driven. It's a shame there's no chart tracking digital sales

Hot 100 Japan is like an awkward mix between airplay and physical sales (radio is not a huge factor there like in the US)

Digitals are dead in Japan now. A massive digital seller sells around 100k if lucky now.

Until late 2011, the digital market was insane in Japan.

My other faves sold just under 2 million, 5 dollar per copy, downloads of the one song. The digital market was therefore INSANELY popular as well as probably one of the biggest in the world.
