The hits on Butterfly keep coming, as its title track - arguably Mariah's last deserved Female Pop Vocal Performance nomination (take that It's Like That!) - leaves us, somewhat prematurely. It is a cut above the vast majority of Mariah's ballads (although it's not the best; that's still in play) because of how much raw passion she invests it in; the callouts to her gospel past are well-appreciated, and it builds to a moment of pure emotion. Gorgeous, and sadly underrated. |
