You can tell by the way Britney is the only female artist to debut with 1M+ in the year 2000. The next time was in 2004, and then 2010, 2011, 2012 and now 2014. Possibly 2015, too
Btw, sales peaked in the 90s and that was because the format of music changed so many times, which is also why catalogue sales were so incredibly high and albums from the 80s/early 90s have sold the most.
