Not even Latin America uses JLo. She isn't iconic anywhere.

Mariah ain't been a thing since the 90's aside from her 4 Stan's on here the general public stopped using her over a decade ago and judging by the numbers no one wants to pay to see her either ...Since JLo stepped on the scene she's been bigger then Mariah
Poor mariah

OK let's compare Mariah's career during J.Lo's musical inauguration:
Mariah Carey:
1999 - 8,1m - Rainbow
2001 - 2,5m - Glitter
2001 - 4,2m - Greatest Hits
2002 - 3,2m - Charmbracelet
2003 - 0,5m - Remixes
2005 - 9,3m - The Emancipation of Mimi
2008 - 2,5m - E=MC²
2009 - 0,8m - The Ballads
2009 - 1,1m - Memoirs
2010 - 0,8m - MCIIY
2014 - 0,3m - Elusive Chanteuse
2015 - 0,2m - #1 to Infinity
= 33,500,000
Jennifer Lopez:
1999 - 8,5m - On The 6
2001 - 9,0m - J.Lo
2002 - 3,0m - This is Me... Then
2002 - 2,8m - J to tha L–O! The Remixes
2005 - 2,0m - Rebirth
2007 - 0,5m - Como Ama una Mujer
2007 - 0,8m - Brave
2011 - 1,0m - Love?
2012 - 0,4m - Dance Again... the Hits[
2014 - 0,2m - A.K.A.
= 28,200,000
Let's assume my quick J.Lo stats are deflated and credit her with +2 million
Recap:
Mariah Carey: 33,500,000 (1999-2016)
Jennifer Lopez: 30,500,000 (1999-2016)
Keep in mind that Mariah does have a catalogue from before 1999 which sold something since 2000 as well, notably: Merry Christmas which has sold 1,4 million copies according to soundscan since 2003 alone.
So while we cannot add any potential catalogue sales for J.Lo because she simply doesn't have an album prior to those I've counted, means that she will remain at 30,5m or probably 30-32m if my estimates are flawed, whereas Mariah is approaching 40m (notably due to #1's and Merry Christmas).
I'd estimate that Merry Christmas did 1,5m in the USA + probably 925,000 internationally for a grand total of 2,425 million since 1999, whereas #1's did around 983,000 copies since 1999 in the United States and probably close to 600,000 worldwide for a grand total of 1,583,000 since 1999.
The rest of her catalogue probably did 500,000 combined
Recap: 1999-2016
MC: 38,100,000 (excl. Essential and The Very Best Of)
J.Lo: 32,000,000
Comparing singles sales:
I have no idea what J.Lo did, but Mariah sold 18 million physical singles up until 1999 in the United States and has now reached an estimated 38,7 million physical and digital singles sold in the United States, that's a 20m+ gain for her in the US alone. Globally, she's released several singles which have sold healthy numbers outside the United States such as AIWFCIY (800k in the UK alone, 1,3m in Korea alone) or WBT which has sold an estimated 800k outside the USA as well. (Or AAO which has sold 400k in the UK alone).
I think we can add another 12,5m to her US total of +20m for a total of 32,5m singles
ie: 38,1m albums + 32,5m singles = 70,6 million records since 1999.
In any case, and if J.Lo did indeed sell more records due to higher digital sales which I think is likely:
1) Mariah has sold more albums during J.Lo's era
2) The gap between the two in records sales since 1999 is less than 10m in any way, if we believe that J.Lo moved 80m records in career sales.
3) Those 10m gap is only possible due to the fact that I excluded 8 album releases by Mariah prior to 1999.
4) Mariah's peak since 1999 (ie TEOM) was bigger than any J.Lo era.
So no matter what you do, claiming Jennifer has been the bigger musical force since 1999 requires alot of unaccounted information, creative statistical work and the exclusion of 8 Mariah Carey eras prior to Jennifer's musical inauguration.
And that's the main point to make. People only look at limited timeframes in order to make XY bigger and Mariah smaller. Mariah did enjoy one of the most brutal downfalls in music history (2001-2004) and recoevered from that with one of the biggest comeback eras the world has ever seen. Mariah has since enjoyed a second slump which brings us to the present whereas J.Lo kept releasing flopping albums for a decade without a return but enjoyed some singles success - most notably On the Floor.
But you cannot hold Mariah's immense career (and impact) prior to J.Lo's emergence against her. That doesn't reflect music history nor common sense. You cannot say that christmas music doesn't count only bc you think it is inferior to "normal" music because after all people are buying that stuff, it has reached a life of its own and almost anybody fails at creating lasting christmas music. It's like saying we cannot count Thriller bc that's been relegated to Halloween music.
+ Mariah doesn't just have successful christmas music, she actually slays that genre year in and year out, having the #1 best selling christmas album by any artist and one of the most successful christmas songs the world has ever known.

Its kind of a weird comparison because I feel like JLo does so much more than Mariah therefore has staying power in lanes M couldn't manage to. But at the same time Mariah Carey is Mariah Carey so. Kind of feel like as far as music Mariah is a legend. Whereas JLo is more a legendary celebrity and brand. You can decide amongst yourselves which matters more. Either way I think they're both equally as famous and remembered seeing as they've never been forgotten? JLo just sucks at making relevant pop music but then again so has Mariah for almost a decade now so.

JLo.
Mariah is forgettable and she wasn't that big Europe.
JLo also has a acting career and successful movies.
Has Mariah ever acted apart from that movie where she made a cameo as a slave?

Mariah was nominated twice for a screen actors guild award, something J.LO never achieved.
Also, Mariah has outsold J.Lo in Europe 4,5:1. Yes, you heard right, it would need J.Lo's career 4 times in order to equal her in Europe. Nice try tho.
Also in other (merchandise) matters, Mariah's perfume "M" won a FIFI Award for best basenote.

I mean you're kind of right. MC's hits surpass JLos but as far as being current JLos music far surpasses MCs for the past 10 years.

I don't know about you or your countries but "Ain't Your Mama" was HUGE in Portugal and huge in streaming. I just didn't think it was fair to say JLo didn't have a hit recently.

well, in the past 10 years Mariah scored:
2008 - #1 - TMB
2008 - #19 - Bye Bye
2009 - #7 - Obsessed
2013 - #15 - #Beautiful
2015 - #11 - All I want for Christmas Is You
evergreens. That's 4 solo top 20 hits and 1 collabo. <3
