Sometimes I take an emotion and create a fictional story behind it. For example, if I'm feeling really happy about something I'll channel those emotions into a love song or party song, even if I'm not in love/partying. Its all about knowing how and where to direct your emotions. And don't try writing if you aren't inspired, cause it won't work.
This is me trying to revive this thread

That's good! For me, I just sit and think about things that have happened and I write down what comes to mind like for example, me feeling sad about a past friendship/ relationship would translate to:
Now we're nothing
We aren't even friends
What did you waste my time for
Why did this have to end
Something along the lines of that lol

I started writing songs many years ago, but I never did it much because I found it hard to put words down on the paper too that were honest yet rhythmically right. I forced myself to keep practicing these past couple of years though and now the melodies and words just come to me, good and bad. I really think practice is the best way to get at it. If you think it sucks, keep going with it anyway and finish it.

I recently haven't been able to write anything because there was no inspiration, but I've wrote two songs in this past week that both had to deal with love. The weird thing is though they're both about different aspects within love and sounds completely different.

Lately, I have been writing like crazy. I have periods where I do that and then I'll just say forget it and I won't write for a while. With writing, I finally figured out what I want to do with my life. And that is being an established songwriter and hopefully write for people like Carrie Underwood (not just because she's my fave).

Awe that's so exciting. I was considering of sending a few songs I wrote to labels in Canada but decided I wanted to strengthen up a bit.

I wrote this out of whimsy. I needed to add words to a melody that's been in my head forever! I finally did… and, to the naked eye, I believe this is utter ********…
Heart Lines
Verse:
For a little while
Our hearts have been unaligned
I wanna figure out
What I don’t know
Feet off of the ground
And you’re not here to remind
Me when I’m falling down
Out of control
Hook:
I’ve been feeling down
Lost with an end to find
When you are not around
Where did you go?
Outside of this town
Our heartbeats will intertwine
When will our love be found?
Will you let me know?

Of course, I have a lot of songs that don't sound like something Carrie could sing. They sound more along the lines of Natalia Kills. But I would love to write with people that have a knack for songwriting. I was considering going to an extreme of trying Sony/ATV, but I backed myself out because that's too much of a huge step for an 18 year old like me. Oh and make sure strengthen them up. I'd like to hear Shania singing a song of yours! XD

It's weird because when I write songs that are more personal, I picture myself as if I'm Taylor Swift or Hunter Hayes writing how they feel. When it's more of a story line song, I pretend as if I'm Carrie Underwood imagining how she'd write and see it.
My last two songs actually were influenced by Enchanted, Haunted and to an extent Sparks Fly. My songs that deal with love are almost always influenced by those same three.

I channeled Middle of Nowhere by Selena Gomez for one I wrote (it is also titled the same), I also wrote one that feels like it sounds so much like a Speak Now reject, despite the message off each songs, but basing off an instrumental of some of the songs on the album. I base mine off of my emotion that day or some life experience, whether I just had it or a long time ago. Or just write one for s***s and giggles because I feel like it. Sometimes when I'm done, I look at the song thinking who I think could fit for it. I have one that I feel like Jason Aldean could sing it.

Oh my God that reminds me, Not even after a week after Cassadee Pope's "Wasting All These Tears" came out I wrote a song called "These Tears I Cry" which was my first attempt at being some super personal heart break song for me.
I still have it, and it's still one of my favourite songs I ever wrote. It kinda took until I hear another song for me to express how I feel.

See, that's what I love about writing, is that it could be related to a song you've heard before Mine also definitely come from songs I love. I also feel mine could have like an Ellie Goulding / Lana Del Rey tune to them. I could probably see one of them sing my latest one, despite what I just said about it sounding like a Speak Now reject. Just the sheer fact you could hear them singing your stuff in your head just shows how much musical knowledge you contain.

I know. And I love when I'm writing a verse and everything just comes out so smoothly and quick and I can hear how the song is suppose to sound in my head and where the beat picks up, what kind of voice I want it, etc.
My only trouble is when deciding what to title the song. Sometimes I'll write the title first and then come up with a song after, other times I just write a ballad and it's like what am I going to name this?

Me too! Now Sometimes I get a little stumped, but then the end result just comes out so well, despite some of my horrendous grammar mistakes, which have been edited like a year, or two, or three after I discover them.
With the titles, I actually come up with those first, then the lyrics. Lately I've had the lyrics before the title. If I don't know what to title it, I have ideas for the song title, then they c**kfight over it and see which one wins, the first will have a bigger chance of winning over the last.

There's one song I wrote called "Past Broken Eyes" .. that I wrote about two months ago? I wrote it a few hours after I found out my nana had terminal cancer.
That song's lyrics just flowed so easily, and I didn't give a crap about cliche or cheesy lyrics because it was all from my heart. The original paper I wrote it on still has the tear drops on it, and although it is an entirely depressing song.. it helped me get through the news.

I actually have one basically about the same thing, I started writing the chorus in July 2011 and I couldn't figure out the rest until 3 months later. Boy was that a mess.
That's so sweet! I never had much experience with death (luckily) to write a lot about it, so thank God only one song came out of something related to it. My s*** is just nothing but emotion, pessimism, f***ery and personality.

I for some reason can't take long to write songs, for me if it isn't done within a few hours I can't finish it. It's weird, but that's my style. I find that if I hold to much, I won't be in the same emotions / feelings I once was in when I originally wrote it.. and I have hard times getting back into specific emotions.

Ever since my grandmother passed, I was literally the most depressing thing ever, but I didn't let my family see that. To this day, it still gets me, every day. it's what I call eternal/internal depression.
Normally I finish a song in like 10 to 20 minutes, but that one was the hardest for me to write because I thought maybe i'd use the chorus for a different song, but then I decided later on when writing the rest of it, that I'll just keep the chorus in that.

Tell me if this is the same for you but...
If I just randomly decide one day to write without any intention I either a) Write really great verses, but the chorus / bridge is terrible b) write a chorus I LOVE and a bridge I'm proud of but the verse looks like twinkle twinkle little star.
Those are the songs I don't even usually type a good draft for and throw away. I find it so hard to just be "okay you're gonna write about this topic today" I need to either be super depressed or in a drunken stupor to write.
