'A New Day...' would have generated well over $400 million in total. it grossed $390.8 million through ticket sales alone as per Pollstar, and Tommy Mottola remarks in his autobiography that, "the retail store placed directly next door to the theater to sell Celine's memorabilia and merchandise turned out record numbers."

Movies? Pop stars or actresses?
The answer is Madonna, Cher, Britney Spears, Mariah Carey and Celine Dion.

1. Madonna
2. Whitney Houston
3. Mariah Carey
4. Janet Jackson
5. Celine Dion
(In Order)
There is no other answers besides this. Aretha, Tina, Cher, Barbara and Diana Ross feels like the top 5 prior to the advent of MTV. But Madonna, Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, Janet Jackson and Celine Dion had better impact on a worldwide scale not just by being musicians but a house-hold name as well.
The next generation would be.
1. Britney
2. Xtina
3. Beyonce
4. Shakira
5. Pink! Kelly Clarkson, Avril, Alicia Keys can fight for this spot.
Only Britney and Beyonce are viable to be in the top 5 list.
This generation would be.
1. Rihanna
2. Lady Gaga
3. Katy Perry
4. Adele
5. Ke$ha or some other pop gurl.
-The only contenders here would be Rihanna and Gaga, Adele's monstrous success is comparable to Alanis slaying in the mid 90s and Shania in the late 90s but one mega album isn't enough to be a contender.
Overall:
1. Madonna
2. Whitney
3. Mariah
4. Janet Jackson
5. Celine Dion
Janet and Celine Dion are in danger being replaced by Britney, Beyonce, Gaga and Rihanna. The Top 3 is pretty much on lock. Madonna no doubt. Whitney no doubt. Mariah can always play her AIWFCIY card aka the biggest song by a female pop gurl. Plus she has plethora of hits and her influence in Pop, R&B and Hip-Hop is noteworthy. If Whitney is "The Voice", Mariah is the "Other Voice". The Yin/Yang of ultimate voices.

I'd switch Whitney with Mariah.
Mariah has actually sold more records and is a bigger brand. What might give Whitney the edge for some people is the Bodyguard era, which was huge, but Mariah Carey has the Musix Box era (Dreamlover, Hero, Without You) and AIWFCIY that make up for it.

14 albums vs 8 albums....
Whitney's sales are MUCH more impressive if you measure the ratio of both their discographies.
Whitney's career was overall more impressive, Mariah stuck to music while Whitney branched out, she was big in movies, tours, fashion etc, her voice has influenced more singers than Mariah (although their influence is close). Whitney's biggest era tops Mariah's in both album and single sales and she also dwarfs her in awards too.
I love both but yeah i think Whitney takes it.

Im a lamb but Mariah is still pretty new in the "legends" club, she could certainly pass Whitney with AIWFCIY alone in the years to come. But right now Whitney is second. Not sure about the brand as Whitney has a slight edge on that department but Mariah makes up to it by being a versatile artist, being an ultimate force in Pop, R&B and Hip-Hop. Not to mention she's still alive and can expand most definitely in being a bigger brand.

No to the first. Mariah's career had much more longevity, which is why she made more albums.
The second is debatable. Mostly because lots of singers you see today use Mariah's singing style more than Whitney's balladeer type. Which is why you see people like Grimes for example, who aren't vocalists but are influenced by Mariah's singing style.

Everything is correct except for Mariah being only stuck to music. Even though Glitter was a flop, it was a legendary flop which she bounced back with Precious and her 30 second feature in The Butler. With that said she still branched out to other areas with them being noteworthy. And also this an overall analysis, even though Whitney had the bigger peak, Mariah has long staying power and she has consistency over Whitney.
Still Whitney is No.2 for now. Mariah has the potential at being No.2 and Whitney's wig is not safe. The same as Janet/Celine, Brit or Bey might replace them in the near future.

I wouldn't say it was because of longevity seeing as Mariah released like 9 albums in the 90's alone, which is because she never toured extensively so she had the chance to do so.
Oh Mariah is a huge inspiration on vocalists too, however i think Whitney edges her out, she seems to have influenced more stars overall. Apart from a select few, anyone that Mariah influenced was even more greatly influenced by Nippy.

Yes it's close either way, however when all is said and done i still believe Whitney had a superior career because it was more diverse and had more star quality to it, i still love both.
Britney won't be passing anyone, when Janet and Celine were her age they had released their best albums critically and were on sold out tours globally, Britney cannot perform anymore and that can only go for so long without her attendance dropping.

The second part wouldn't make much difference as Mariah didn't just influence balladeer vocalists but she has the R&B Hip-Hop artists naming her a huge influence as well. It's not your typical "voice influence" but on the overall musician/artistic side as well. She was able to get out from Whitney's blueprint and carve her own niche.

I do agree that Whitney had the superior career overall but her untimely passing makes her legacy where it's at now. Mariah on the other hand has still more room to expand.
I actually prefer Xtina over Brit taking a place in the top 5. I hope X can have an TEOM sized era and have a shot in the top 5 at least.

Well... there is a reason Mariah is the second most richest female artist in history. All those hits and album sales count for something.

- she is the 2nd highest-selling female artist in history (175 million albums sold, 45 million singles sold)
- she released the 1st and second highest-selling French albums in history, as well as the highest-selling live French album
- she released the 4th & 5th highest-selling albums in history by a female artist (3rd & 4th if we omit the Bodyguard soundtrack), both of which are in the 20 highest-selling albums of all-time
- she released one of the top 5 highest-selling holiday albums in history (2nd highest-selling by a female artist), and the 2nd highest-selling compilation by a female artist
- she is one of 2 female artists to have grossed over a billion dollars in concert ticket sales (something like $510 million on tour (one of which is the 3rd highest-grossing tour by a female artist), and $498 through both Vegas residencies thus far
- her perfumes had generated $850 million from 2003 through 2010 (definitely one of the most successful celebrity fragrance lines)
- she has won 5 Grammys, including Album of the Year
only Madonna trumps her in the grand scheme of things, imo.
