It's obvious that you don't even know what you're talking about.
In achievements and impact and talent and movements Gaga is superior.
Granted, Katy appeals to more people because of her music but what does she really stand for? What is she doing to push boundaries to bring attention to certain problems? If she does have a voice she isn't using it.

Oh, and yes. Teenage Dream has sold more records than any Gaga era counting TFM and TF separate.

Most of her support comes from her earlier music, that's what she is most known for. So my comment does apply and in any case touring isnt really relevant in being the voice of a generation.
|
Yeah. Four years of music. Name another person who ever pulled touring numbers like Gaga when they were still at the top of their game and one of the biggest names in the world. Not Madonna. Not Britney, her tours weren't as big. Neither Katy nor Rihanna nor even Beyonce, either. How does being able to sell out stadiums worldwide just four years into your career, and not even four years into relevance, not indicate how massive of a star she is?

Katy is only recognised for her successful singles, and that is the only thing the people care about her.

How can you say more people like Katy when more people are going to Gaga's tour, or when more people have bought her records than Katy's records? Gaga would win because this time will forever be connected to the gay rights movement (at least for America) and Gaga's name is synonmous with that and LGBT support.
There's this really weird misconception that if you go #1, people like you more than others, and that's just not true. The people of the GP who buy songs don't give a **** about who you are or what you do, they just buy your song and move on. In order for someone to be a defining popstar, people have to care about who you are and pay attention to you, and you can't deny that more people pay attention to Gaga than Katy.
|
Technically most of the GP download songs illegaly, and most of the GP won't spend money to go to a popstar's concert, but I understand your point though

Rihanna. None other can touch her. The fact that she's as big as she is and is from an island in the middle of the Caribbean says it all. Not to mention she's done more than both of them in her career and is still younger.

You think people think of Gaga as the most giving caring person in the world?
Lol, shes still the crazy girl who wears weird outfits to the GP as a whole.
Katy Is the cute girl who makes fun hits and has a quirky attitude.
Neither are some kind of saint in the eyes of the GP.
Katy doesn't push boundaries because that isn't her style, nor does she need to because she gets enough coverage, and it would likely ruin her image.

Gaga's last tour grossed $225,000,000. Katy's last tour grossed around $70,000,000.
225,000,000 - 70,000,000 = 155,000,000
Katy has won around 110 awards. Lady Gaga has won around 240 awards.
240 - 110 = 130
Katy has sold around 65,000,000 records worldwide, most of that coming from Teenage Dream.
Gaga has sold around 105,000,000 records worldwide, most of that coming from The Fame Monster.
105,000,000 - 65,000,000 = 40,000,000.
I don't see how my math is wrong. A simple Google search will bring all of these numbers and facts to you.

You can't seperate TF and TFM because worldwide the two eras are counted as one and the sales are combined. The Fame has sold around 14,000,000 worldwide, more than both of Katy's albums combined. Not to mention the 65,000,000 records all together with albums and singles combined.
But obviously you're going to continue to deny even though there are several people supplying you with facts.

Katy is seen as the untalented , pretty bimbo who creates meaningless pop music and Gaga is seen as the freak. However, Gaga's massive charity work has been publicized and her gay rights activism is something EVERYONE knows about. If you were to ask someone what charity Katy has supported, no one would know. Umm I didn't even know Rihanna was from an island until this year. I always thought she was African American black. I'm pretty sure I'm not alone on this one. Atleast I don't wanna be. Ha!

Voice of our gen, is a stretch, but out of these 2 choices, Katy Perry, maybe?
She's less polarizing + her music has a much larger appeal, i guess.

I didn't say more people liked her, I said she is liked by a broader range of people. Where most of Gaga's fans are teenage and twenty-something boys and girls, Katy has that plus little girls plus their mothers, etc. She is the ideal pop star in that boys want her, girls want to be her, and she's very non-offensive.

You seem to not have a clear idea of how controversial and polarizing Gaga is to the general public. You will rarely get a neutral response from the GP in regards to Gaga. And pushing boundaries is, actually, something that's important in cultural impact.

Wrong already.
Your argument is also weak, and it pertains little to the point of the article.

That's not true, though. Gaga's main demographic is teenagers, but so is Katys. However, Gaga's critical acclaim and massive success doesn't just come from teenagers, it's from older people as well. I mean, Gaga's sold out South Korean show was 18+ only.
But yeah, everyone has an opinion and is entitled to it.

That's my whole point. A lot of it is negative.
But because the GP can't understand her she's the voice of the generation?
She is without a doubt right now, but you're using all the wrong reasons.

You are a lost case Kats. Being cute and fun and making generic hits isn't making Katy or anybody else into a representative of an entire generation. Maybe being over the top and creative won't make Gaga into one either but she's way closer than Katy will ever be.

Did I say it was because they can't understand her?
She's the voice of the generation because she speaks up for all those that need it. She speaks up about bullying and is the true "fierce advocate" for the LGBT community. She is loud about her message and makes an effort to spread the values of equality and tolerance. She's the voice of the generation because of the scale of her work and of her effort that she uses to push her message. She bankrupted herself in order to make a spectacle of herself. She is the voice of the generation because she captures everyone's attention and keeps the pop world focused squarely on her. What will Gaga wear next? How much will her next album sell? What will she say next?
She is the voice of the generation because she uses the insane amount of recognition she has to stand up for one of the most important social issues of our time.
