If Rihanna weren't in Battleship I don't think it's a big claim to make that it'd be roughly as successful as it'd be otherwise since nobody cares about the stars in these kinds of films. Audiences care about the action/storyline/special effects. The stars of Avatar and Transformers weren't even secondary to the success of those films - they were tertiary.

It's less of a stretch to say that Beyonce brought in urban appeal to the Austin Powers franchise.

Really? What's the reason behind the megaflop of John Carter then if it isn't due the lack of starpower?

The only time I hear about the film other than when Rihanna is being the main subject is when the press were saying that could it be a bigger flop than that film released earlier this year (the titles completely gone form my head?).
It would be stupid not to capitalise on one of the biggest names in music and her stan base.

I know 20 people that all went to see it yesterday only cause Rihanna was in it. If she wasn't they all said that they would of probably watched it online.

It's because of the EPIC FAIL marketing and the genericness of the movie's look. Like what was said, action movies tend to rely more on its looks, the epic action moments and.....well, it's hard to explain. I know you get it anyway. Just common sense.

This is so true, even before the movie was released they were saying it would flop and that Rihanna would get dragged now that it's having success they don't care about the fact that Rihanna is there

And actually, Rihanna has more time on screen than some of the main stars, she was the only female star having a poster and the way the movie was promoted was all around her so yes, she is more responsible for its success than people would think but she never gets the credit she deserves.

I haven't even seen her name in any of the marketing.

Everyone is going to see giant robots and explosions. For all intents and purposes, this movie is Transformers 4. It was never gonna flop.

Terrible, muddled marketing? Which is much more of a death knell for an action movie than lack of star power. What star power did Avatar have, exactly? Did it matter? No, cuz it almost never does for these kinds of films.

and.. no. She is not the main reason why this movie is doing so well. But she is the reason why ppl had an idea about it. Because of her presence. She was the main promo tool. Im sure most of her WW fans are just going to go see it because of her. She was promoted as the female lead because no one knows who Brooklyn is. And well the other members of the cast are not that relevant overseas compared to her. In the US.. the true Blood star will more likely be the main promo person. Because he's the star and the "typical leading man". Im just glad that this venture wont really be a failure. I didnt want her first movie to fail. Id rather her fail on her own in a cheesy comedy.

Yes, give the most successful movie of all times as an example.

Also don't forget that Avatar was in production for 10 years, Cameron was the director and the hype was through the roof because of this. Even if a pack of monkeys was the cast, the movie would be successful nevertheless.
Oh and Sam Worthington, Sigourney Weaver and Michelle Rodriguez aren't considered as stars I suppose.

Let's not forget that the star power is part of the marketing too.
"A new movie with Brad Pitt? Cool! I'm gonna watch this." (even if the movie is a total crap and the only promotion is the trailer played in the cinemas) - This is a simple example of how a sole name can bring in more people.
