Timelines for previous death or resignation replacements, 1940+:
William Rehnquist passed 9/3/2005. But John Roberts was already in the process before that because Sandra was retiring, so Roberts just replaced one justice instead of another.
Then when Sandra retired a few months later, there was someone to replace her before she left.

Abe Fortas was forced to resign, and it took a year to get a replacement because Reagan's first few choices were rejected...He himself replaced a justice who resigned to be UN ambassador.

Whittaker had a nervous breakdown and resigned. His replacement was sworn in a few weeks later.

Jackson died 10/9/54. Harlan was nominated in January, and was confirmed in March. Somewhat of a delay.

Vinson died 9/8/53. Warren was appointed a few weeks later, having already been promised by Eisenhower a seat eventually.

Rutledge died 9/10/49 and Minton came in about a month later, but the president had already asked Minton while Rutledge was on his deathbed.

Byrnes left after a year to lead the Office of Economic Stabilization. Rutledge was confirmed 4 months later.

Murphy died, replaced by Clark about a month later.

Roberts resigned because he hated his fellow judges for being so difficult. Burton was confirmed less than 2 months later.

Stone died and Vinson replaced him about 2 months later.

So I guess Fortas was the most contentious replacement. Hmm.
I'm gonna assume that retiring judges at least waited for a replacement to be chosen before running off.

ETA: Oop, no. Kennedy officially started in February 1988 when Powell left in June, cuz the first two nominees were rejected. Eh, don't feel like going through everyone tho.

As a black woman, I was no fan of his so I can't say I'm sad he's going to get replaced. Hopefully Obama (or Hillary/Bernie if they win) get to choose the next Justice to fill his seat. Maybe the attack on women's abortion rights can be stopped for a while and we don't get a racist/homophobe.

Ginsburg and 2-3 other justices will be 78+ during the next president's first term.

So basically half of the court will be replaced within the next decade. We're pretty much doomed if a conservative wins the Oval Office.
