People expected it to sell well, but not as well as it did. Fearless was giant, but Speak Now's debut single, Mine, didn't do so well.
Also, this was the point in Taylor's career where everyone was like "when is she going to finally grow up and stop singing songs about high school crushes?" so Mine did its job in that sense, presenting her in a more mature light.
