Taylor beating Britney's record is a great feat that took 14 years for another woman to accomplish. Britney goes from being #1 to being #2. True, but also, there was not much streaming back then and iTunes was not being used as it is now. I mean to say that it used to be that if you wanted to listen to a particular song off of an album, you had to actually buy the whole album. Now, you can download individual tracks instead of buying the whole album. The exception now is when a star either has a loyal fan base (as Taylor's are) or the album is so good that you would want the physical album as a trophy or memento. This is where Taylor excels. Her fan base is extremely loyal and also, 1989, just happens to be a very good album.

People expected it to sell well, but not as well as it did. Fearless was giant, but Speak Now's debut single, Mine, didn't do so well.

Also, this was the point in Taylor's career where everyone was like "when is she going to finally grow up and stop singing songs about high school crushes?" so Mine did its job in that sense, presenting her in a more mature light.
