This is EXACTLY what people are listening to now. It measures accurately who listens to what and how much. People illegal download these days, so even though album sales etc, can measure success, sites like lastfm are FAR more accurate in all ways.

Fail, Beyonce and Rihanna both sell massive amounts of records so your argument is flawed. The site is crawling with rock fans which is why they all have over 200 million plays. Not even a third of actual stans in the world have a last.fm! If this site was actually a reflection of popularity it would mirror the people who are sitting at the top of the decade sales and charting lists because they are the ones who sold the most legally. How in the **** can the world not be listening to people yet they're selling millions of records every era while rock bands can barely even go platinum. Radiohead has more than Michael Jackson and Madonna so boy bye!

True, but its very confusing, especially in the modern digital era. For example Shakira has a great stage name, because when people say Shakira, you always understand what they mean, but when somebody mentions Pink, they can mean the singer, a color, Pink Floyd or something else. Plus the fact that sometimes it is spelled Pink and sometimes P!nk is even worse.

For example she could have been a #1 trending topic on Yahoo or on twitter many times, but wasn't because those sites didn't combine the searches for Pink and P!nk. So there are many negatives too.
