They don't need to be because they have other avenues to compensate for that. Mariah and Celine have sold more ALBUMS than other artists have sold in RECORDS. Celine has grossed over half a billion in tour gross, and her Vegas show generated roughly $400mil in revenue (tickets, merchandise, sponsorship, etc). Mariah, although not a touring giant has sold upwards of 200 million records, has a successful fragrance line, and jewelry partnership at Claire's. That doesn't include her Pepsi endorsement, her licensing and publishing, or her shoe collection on HSN.
