My grandmother who is a southern woman born around the 1930s believes in the quote "spare the rod spoil the hold" or however it goes" and she'd whip us with switches (amongst other objects lol) and have us get them ourselves. Even spanking has nothing to do with teaching your kid "self-respect," at best it's about establishing authority and correcting a little kid who is literally out of control, not just doing something you didn't like.

And you should be past the point of even needing to do that by the time your kid has reached adolescence. If the only way you know how to correct your teenager is by bending them over your knee you have failed and aren't going to get anywhere with them at that point, anyway.
