Parents legitimately rallied against Xtina/Eminem, and it's hard to get over that. Insane amounts of negativity about both of them. The media is MUCH gentler to these two than they were in the early 2000s. Barely anyone rallied against Britney, in comparison.

3. Britney plays it safe with her music and her life (her breakdown doesn't count - that's clearly not her fault). Let's face it - you don't expect her to be groundbreaking. You feel bad hating her, because you have reason to believe she's been mistreated by the world. You cheer for her, you do not want to see her defeated, you feel empathy for her. You know her entire career has never been about her calling the shots, but she's so humble and good at what she does, you think that's just fine. You don't expect her to be anything but America's sweetheart. She is consistent: she will dance her butt off and lipsync (better than being out of breath and lacking dancing),she will pump out current pop music (avoid experimentation), her personal life story will remain airtight and she's not going to be ostentatious about her wealth. She is likable, you can relate and you can stomach her easily. This is not like Xtina. You feel nothing hating Xtina because you know she can and WILL take it, and we naturally want these people to fail when you don't find inspiration in their strength. She's the prettier, fiercer girl with the natural talent who knows she can own it. We don't like that overconfidence. Between someone who has fallen badly in front of us, who has obvious flaws and is publicly trying to keep it all together compared to someone publicly "unbreakable" with a freakish natural talent that you can't ever imagine to replicate, it is EASY to pick who you want to cheer on. Because one makes you feel cruel.

It has little to do with what Britney has actually done; she had excellent timing. She's more successful because the GP was simply more comfortable with her as a whole. The young fan bases really impact how successful an artist is... but the purchasing power still lies with the parents, and who the media is telling them is a better role model (if not just marginally). I love them both. I personally prefer Xtina's genuineness, but I probably listen to more Britney in any given day. I won't talk about Mandy/Jessica because.. well their careers were kinda short to compare.

Xtina was an adult by the time Dirrty came out, that doesn't count.

I don't know where you're coming from, but Britney was very over-sexualized. She posed for men's magazines at 17, and of course that Rolling Stone cover spread where they played with the Lolita theme. In one photo, she's in a cheer leading outfit raising her skirt to reveal her thighs, laying down on a career with her top half off with her bra peaking out. In another, she's holding on to a tricycle wearing short shorts with 'BABY' on it. Then there's the one where she's in a child's room, in front of a cabinet of baby dolls, where she's wearing a push up bra.

Its actually kind of disturbing. It's one thing to be sexy, but her team actually played around with her being jailbait.

No one is saying that that's the rule. But for Britney, timing was everything.

the fact that she came first is the main reason. and the whole sweet southern good girl thing she had going on was also a big part of it. She knew how to stay in the headlines too. the videos, Rolling Stone shoot, did she get implants or not talk, dating Justin, saying she was a virgin, etc.

Christina benefited from being on the MMC with her. the media loved to make a rivalry out of that. She had an amazing voice and thats what set her apart from the pack.

Jessica was doing more ballads than pop songs. She didn't start acting like Britney till her 2nd album and that was a total flop.

Mandy was like what 14/15 while the others were 18/19? she had the weakest material and the least promotion out of the 4. Great actress though.
