America is one big continent. When they say South America, Central America and North America is just to be more specific when pointing out a region. I'm from South America and I have no problem to say "I'm American" because that's my continent, the problem is that US people have been taught bad and they think only "Americans" are people from the US.
I get offended when Americans try to be too exclusive when defining North America.
I mean they already took the word "American," and now they mostly all claim North America is just USA, Canada, and Mexico, OR just US and Canada.
It's really common, from what I've seen a lot, that they try to discount Mexico as being part of North America.
They'll try saying it's Central or Latin America but not North America. I swear it's common and irritates me so much. I even lashed out at a girl in my Spanish class over it a few days ago.

Though i subscribe to the general concnsus that America is seperated into two continents, i have a better understanding of how one can believe in the single continent model. If continents are only determined by cultural affiliation and their land mass, simply disregard the cultual differences between the North and South,and accpet that though their two distinct masses, technically they're not seperated (other than the Panama Canal). I get the logic now

Weve already been through this. Some were taught that North and South America are seperate continents & others that it was all just one continent. That is at least how it's taught here in Canada & the US.

Maybe because in north america there aren't indians anymore they think they are a continet apart... maybe they're forggeting there was indians at once, unfortunately they couldnt survive for so long!

It's just a name though... some even have Europe & Asian as one continent. (called Euroasia). No big deal.

Your post is very sad. For starters, the vast majority of the world considers America two continents, and the reason why would be obvious if you've ever had the fortune of glancing at a globe.
Secondly, to contribute a differing perpective in regards to the defining of continents as racism and xenophobia only indicates that you likely already hold that view of NORTH Americans, since the categorization is based on neither.
Thridly, your analogy unsurprisingly FAILS because Wesern and Eastern Europe are completely connected, which is the reason why they're regarded as one contient. A better bet would have been to question why Europe and Asia are considered two contients (to some) since they also share the same body of land. But even then the answer wouldn't have been "racism", unless you've redefined the term in your unique perspective to mean "different cultures".

List of countries that consider America as one continent: Mexico, Guatemala, Belice, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Panama, Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Brasil, Argentina, Chile, Peru, etc.

I don't think the majority of the world considers America two continents, at least not the ones that are actually in "America"
