BATCH ØNE

Vision – Pandora’s Box
“Far and wide”, “reap/sow”, and “forbidden fruit”? 3 clichés in the first 4 lines and two more in the rest of the verse? I shouldn’t even have to say this, but the verses were incredibly familiar. It felt as if the words were stolen rather than authentically minimalistic created. The chorus fit the theme and emotions of the movie rather well, but the “fox” line was incredibly clunky and needed to be rephrased. This was definitely the weakest of your past few entries. Work on creating something more authentic to yourself and craft a concept or metaphor around that.


Hugamari – Memories
That wasn’t a good first note to read, as it kinda set you up for failure and gave us a negative view of the song before we even read it. I could tell reading the song it was rushed; you didn’t have to tell me that. It was pretty childish in a way that fit the movie, but didn’t really impress me. I wish you had captured the naivety of childhood rather than the lack of vocabulary. This was basically just your style dumbed down and there was really nothing substantial the song had to offer, yet there were no glaring mistakes and I’m sure there will be worse this round.


MattyTacos – Wildside
This felt rushed to me. The verses don’t really offer much or contribute to the storyline. The second stanza felt lazy even with its bigger word choices. The prechorus was definitely the best part of the song. I loved the couplet “I found myself in the flash of lights/I’d rather burn in the dark tonight”. You should have expanded on this concept of flashing lights and fame to create a more vivid image and further let the audience into the protagonist’s lifestyle. The chorus was sufficient but didn’t really pack any punch. From what I could tell having only read a synopsis of the movie it appeared to fit the storyline and themes, but was fairly ambiguous apart from the spelled out references.


Nait Phoenix – The Guardians Mantra
There were a lot of almost clever lines here. Still, there was some awkward phrasing (A wrecking ball on its last limb, for example) that held the song back from its full potential. I liked the prechorus and the unapologetic “that’s how I like it”, although it contrasted strangely to the more confessional verse and chorus. The rap was a risk for sure and elements of it worked, especially at the beginning. By the end it was bordering on bizarre. The movie tie ins are obvious, so there’s no question it would work for the movie, but I wish it was a bit more accessible to the audience as a credits song that could stand alone.


Achilles. – Somewhere to Belong
I like that you experimented with structure this week, but there were actually a few sections that would have made strong choruses. The “learn where I’m from and who I’m meant to be” part would have made a strong chorus. Overall, the references you included to the movie were rather vague, although it was obvious throughout what you were referring to know the movie. Still, had I not been told this was about Harry Potter I may not have been able to guess the movie you chose. It felt a little cheesy at times, which made lines like “don’t fight back little freak” a little awkward.


jpow – Just Scream
I was doing a little bop to the first verse until the “forever in a spin” line came and got me to a halT. This only a step or two above a “complete broken mess/without much repair” to give you a taste of your own medicine. The song lacked any sense of personality. There was really no way of knowing whether this was the theme song to a Harry Potter movie, a Twilight movie, or a bad bottoming sesh. This felt really lazy and uninspired, and I realize you weren’t really a fan of this challenge but I know you can do a lot better and it makes me want to “just scream” at you to put your heart into this again and produce another masterpiece.

Yeah, I focused more on other parts of the song rather than the verses. I had a much better direction to go in with the verses but I didn't do it.

I worked the best with what I had, the movie itself is cliche. I tried to use some more elaborate rhymes which I was told to do last week, I tried some half-rhymes.

Also idk how i'm supposed to craft a concept / metaphor around myself, when i'm trying to write about a movie.
This challenge was about the movie and fitting a song to it, not really a challenge to show off our authentic style.

The point is that the song felt completely detached from you. Usually when artists write for a soundtrack they watch the movie and then figure out what message they feel is important to convey (based on interviews I've seen from various artists). It's possible to tie the themes and events to your own life. Movies and songs are good to us when we feel immersed in them, and when you're not even connected to your own song it's hard for the audience to be. This has been my biggest problem with your songs this season. It feels like you're putting up a front of stories and imagery to block out your true emotions when your songs could be a marriage of both.
