I don't know. I've always said that the only reason Britney came back (I know she's dead again, save it) is because Blackout was a legitimately great pop album. Her image, her personal life, her appeal were all down the drain but the music was still there. If Damita Jo had been her magnum opus I don't think she would have flopped into irrelevance. It was the lethal combination of awful PR + bad music.

Her downfall is pretty fascinating tbh. Even Whitney managed a Platinum album in 2008 after her drug scandals. Janet just kept falling and falling. Maybe she just didn't establish her audience? Going super pop with All For You hurt her I think. I wasn't into the R&B scene in that time but I can imagine it alienated some of her core audience (the ones who would have still been there 10 years later) and the sales were still good because pop sold a lot of albums at the time so it might not have been apparent.
Is Tove Lo's debut any good? I'm thinking of giving it a spin since I've been obsessed with Cool Girl but the atrocious album cover has been warding me off ever since.
My opinion is a rather unpopular one, but I love her debut. The melodies are great in each song.
Whitney's first two albums slayed in the 80's, just two albums and over 50M+ albums sold and then of course she ruled the 90's in probably what was the biggest female peak in pop with The Bodyguard.

It was part of the contract that it would be released as a single. She was cuckoo during Blackout so they had to wait until the next album cycle They didn't want to burn bridges with Bloodshy & Avant cause they make such great music with her.
