Rihanna is premdominately an Urban artist atm.

You can't fault her for not going Top 5 on Pop with tracks like Work and Needed Me. And even so, streaming SHOULD be in her favor. It's better than having to rely on radio which isn't even controlled by the public.

And how is that bad that she has hits because the public actually consumes them and not because radio spammed them?
Literally a testimonial to her hit making power -- even when radio neglects her the public still consumes her music strongly.

I think it will be the best for her in the long run tbh. She'll get more acclaim and a reliable audience/radio audience delving further into artistic R&B music, which is the opposite of what Janet did and kind of caused her downfall and erasure.

Janet's erasure has way less to do with that and almost all to do with Nipplegate

Artists in the 80s rarely smashed with their first single, labels took a lot more time to slowly groom artists and cultivate an audience. A lot of modern acts would benefit from that and perhaps wouldn't burn out so quickly.

I don't know. I've always said that the only reason Britney came back (I know she's dead again, save it) is because Blackout was a legitimately great pop album. Her image, her personal life, her appeal were all down the drain but the music was still there. If Damita Jo had been her magnum opus I don't think she would have flopped into irrelevance. It was the lethal combination of awful PR + bad music.
