For Gaga, I think a good way of going about it would be to make it seem like she's making a statement about the future of the music industry (to get the think-pieces rolling in) and simply offering up a good deal - free music. Let it grow organically rather than "cheating" it to avoid (most) backlash.
IMO, it would go something like this:
- Release lead single as per usual. Debut with video etc etc.
- Release second single as per usual. Debut with video etc etc.
- Announce that the album will be available for free. Explain why (making statement, gift for fans, whatever.)
- albumtitle.com is immediately launched, it is sponsored by a brand (i.e. Virgin) for major $.
- Show a counter tracking the downloads. This will be used for receipts.
- Further singles are announced with videos for streaming as sales will suffer. Lead singles success will hopefully encourage radio support.
- Deluxe album is released physically, at full price. Fans and non-digital crowd buy it.
- Email addresses collected via download are sent details about the tour.
- They hopefully make major $ from the increased exposure of the album.
It'd be a killer marketing move if it was all tied into her space trip.
The problem with doing a free album is that it sets a precedent. What does she do for the next one? Charge?
