Lean On was huge. It wasn't as big as those hits in the United States, but globally it was HUGE.
And even then, those are still all huge hits in the same brackets of streams.
On YouTube you will find a Shakira song that didn't even chart with more views than #1 hits. That is not close to what margins of proportionality Spotify has.
Why don't artists release covers as singles anymore?
Literally in the 90's and before almost every artist covered a song or two on their album, and most released a cover as a single once in their career.
It seems like this past decade it just disappeared. Nobody even bothers to cover a song on their album, let alone release a cover. None of the Pop Girls have done it this decade.
I can't even think of the last time a cover was a hit. And the only times it's happen this decade if when an artist covers a current hit. Nobody covers an old hit and makes it a new hit anymore.
I think part of it has to do with royalties. Everyone and their mother needs some obscure writing credit, even if they don't really do a thing. That's probably only one part of a bigger portion though.
Britney 34x platinum in the US (debut album 1999) and in actual sales Britney is 40M+ but not certified to that level platinum.
