I wouldn't call it different at all. Any crossover success for any artist will appeal to more listeners. Kelly Clarkson appealed to a country crowd and has had 2 top 5 hits with country artists. She pops up on Reba's tour stops frequently as well.
You can't tell me that if she released:
Breaking Your Own Heart
The Sun Will Rise
The War is Over
That a hit song would generate her country sales as well. Most people who listen to country (no offense to country fans) are listening to watered down pop music with a fiddle or steel guitar in the mix. The "crossover" effect is nothing more than marketing. If you release a single as a country single it will be played on more radio stations across the US. Therefore, it reaches a larger audience and that is the reason why country sells more than pop. If you go across the US, you are going to find a large part of it gets multiple country stations compared to other formats.

We were talking about album sales based off of one hit (WDKY), were we not? I don't see that crossing over.
And those albums you mentioned were Country that crossed over to pop. If you think country music listeners are gonna purchase a Pop/Rock album with R&B/Dance influences just for 1 or 2 "country" songs, you're sorely mistaken.
This is off topic but the only problem with this album is that there's no cohesive sound. Thematically and lyrically, the album is very cohesive but having so many different genres influencing an album doesn't help it's sales. It may sell individual songs, thanks to iTunes, but not an entire album. Most buyers don't have such an eclectic taste for music.
Also, you're perception that country music is "watered down pop music with a fiddle or steel guitar in the mix" is horribly off. Country music usually tells a story whereas pop music does not. It's more than just the instrumentation. Country songs have different vocals, different song structures, different instrumentation, different production aspects and usually have a lot more depth than pop music. Let's face it, aside from "Dark Side", nothing on Stronger is too deep.
Don't let the singles Carrie & Taylor put out fool you into thinking that's the face of country music. But even then, they have their niche because they are primarily country artist who are marketed to the Country world. Kelly performing a couple times with Reba or Jason or Rascal Flatts does not make her a country artist. Not yet anyway.

Only because Kelly and Jason were dropping hints on twitter...
