I'm old enough to remember their eras during that time. Secrets did for Toni basically what Red did for Taylor Swift. She became a household name and that album was everywhere. She was on the radio a lot (double A side single helped), and MTV played "You're Making Me High" quite often.

As for Celine, she was much like Adele. She was huge and selling albums, but for some reason she just didn't seem like a "pop girl". MHWGO was a HUGE hit though.

There would be a ton of anti-Madonna users and threads; the early 90's was a trying time for her career with all of the Erotica/Bedtime Stories backlash.

Whitney was dying down by 1994. Look up the year end charts - Mariah, of the three ladies, was the front runner. She'd released "hero" that year, and soon after (1995) One Sweet Day.

I remember there's some video from 92 and Madonna shooting a video or posing for a shoot and they ask her something about the album chart and she's like "That Damn Bodyguard soundtrack is still #1"

I always feel that out of all her peers Whitney threatened Madonna most, because at Madonna's peak Whitney was the one who was giving her the hardest time on the charts. I remember when Whitney passed Madonna admitted to being very envious of Whitney at one point. But at the end of the day they had respect for each other. I remember that time the reporter tried to get Whitney to dis Madonna for wearing cone bras and Whitney clocked her real quick. And then when Mariah and Whitney duets in 98 Madonna said that whitney should get top billing in the duet.

Arguably, the biggest at that time was Mariah, hands down. Whitney's "Bodyguard" stint was around 1992-93 and after that, she wasn't shown too much on MTV or heard often on the radio. I clearly remember Mariah being EVERYWHERE. Not a fan of hers, but everyone at school was.

Madonna was popular, but nowhere near big ass force as the 80s - while you'd like to think her sales are indicative of her reigning popularity, in truth, a lot of people were turned off by E-rotica. "I'll remember" was a good hit, but not the force of Mariah's singles. Bedtime stories, while critically acclaimed, was not as widely celebrated as you think. "Take a Bow" was her only HUGE hit there.

Janet Jackson's "janet" album was still riding a bit high, but the latter singles (past "again") were not as huge.

I'd say other acts were also dominating the scene - Ace of Base, Gin Blossoms, all those random Eurodance acts (Real Mccoy, Culture Beat).
