Because if it weren't for music, I doubt most people would even be buying iPods or iPhones, especially not at $400. The problem is that Apple not only undermines an artist's and label's profit by giving consumers a reason to avoid buying CD's but they also take a significant portion of the proceeds generated by digital download sales (30%) so the artists and labels are getting screwed out of a LOT of money. Ringtones and Guitar Hero/Rock Band licensing don't even come close to making up for the loss.
Another thing to consider is a digital single = roughly 1/10 of an album, so when a single sells 3 million downloads, that's only equivalent to about 300k albums sold. That's a piss-poor number and that's why labels have such a hard time getting enough sales momentum from singles.
