Let's be honest, the majority of people that download music illegally don't spend $ on these artists AT ALL. Everybody assumes that concert sales and merchandise make up for the fact that album sales are way down, but they don't. And when people cop out the old excuse that they "don't want to support the greedy record labels," they're usually BS-ing people to justify their own behavior.
Here's the breakdown of a CD's revenue:
CD costs $13.99:
$1.00=manufacturing/shipping
$1.00=the artist
$1.00=the producer(s)
$.50=album artwork
$1.50=music videos
$2.00=mixers/instrumentalists/engineers
$1.00=additional promo
$3.00=Music label
$3.00=retailer
Basically, that's an estimate of how the CD pie is divided. And yet people are willing to pay $400 for a portable music player (that costs less than $20 to manufacture) and you never hear one word about how they refuse to support the greedy Apple execs. What this all boils down to is the fact that people lack integrity and the ability to do simple math.
