Seriously. At least
American Idol winners still debut in the Top 10.
The last American Idol winner, Phillip Phillips, debuted at No. 4 with 169,000 copies sold.
Past American Idol winners has debuted in the Top 5. Out of 10 seasons, only one flopped majorly, and that's Lee DeWyze with 39,000 copies sold, debuting at No. 19.
The Voice doesn't have a good track of success either.
Season 1, Javier Colon, released his album and it debuted at No. 134 on the Billboard 200 with 9,974. It only lasted on the Billboard 200 for one week. He departed from Universal.
Season 2 winner, Jermaine Paul, still has not released an album. His winning song peaked at No. 83, with his follow up single featuring Bake Shelton did not even break the Hot 100.
Season 3 winner, Cassadee Pope, was crowned less than three months ago. We'll see how that works.
I think with these types of television series, it really does show that the viewers only watch for the judges (celebrities), not the contestants. It's no longer 2002 where we root for our favorite contestant. We're rooting for our favorite judges.
