50. Rihanna- S&M

Upon release of her 2010 album Loud, Rihanna revealed that she planned to release "S&M" as the third single from the record, along with an unexpected music video. Upon hearing the song for the first time, despite the raunchy subject matter, I was convinced it would be a hit. And I was right. It became Rihanna's tenth #1, making her the youngest artist to get that many, and the video was viewed over 33 million times. Just another step for Rihanna on her way to becoming the biggest pop star in the US. This is the third of four songs by Rihanna on the chart.

49. Black Eyed Peas- Just Can't Get Enough

In kinder terms, I was underwhelmed by the lead single from the BEP's 2010 album The Beginning, "The Time (Dirty Bit)". In more honest terms, I absolutely hated it. So, my opinion of the era was basically riding on the second single. And "Just Can't Get Enough" delivered. Despite not being as influential as "Where Is the Love", or as funky as "Don't Phunk With My Heart", the song did a remarkable job of showing off lead singer Fergie's vocals, and featured surprisingly adept rapping skills from will.i.am and Taboo. This is the only song by The Black Eyed Peas on the chart.

48. Taylor Swift- The Story of Us

Let me start by saying I am not, and will likely never be, a fan of Taylor Swift. Her music is very cute and charming, and I understand why a lot of people like it, but being a straight guy, I often find her music hard to relate to. However, "The Story of Us" was one of her most relatable songs yet, and it also had one of her best music videos of the era. In my opinion, it was a mistake to release it to pop radio; I think "Sparks Fly" would have done much better. I am not a fan of Taylor's, so I don't really care how she does in the future, but I hope she can keep supplying me with guilty pleasures like this for a while longer.

47. Bruno Mars- The Lazy Song

I clearly remember, the moment I heard "The Lazy Song" was going to be released as a single, I thought, this will flop. I just couldn't picture a shamelessly novelty song like TLS going anywhere on radio, even though I really liked it. However, I was proven wrong, and Bruno was able to keep his string of hits alive. The best part about the song was the very interesting and funny video. This is the last of two songs by Bruno Mars on the chart.

46. Katy Perry feat. Kanye West- E.T.

You know those songs when the first time you hear them, you can immediately tell that if released, they will smash digitally and become a huge radio hit? Well, E.T. wasn't one of those. Definitely the riskiest single release of Katy's career, and the fact that it succeeded only strengthened her standing as one of 2011's biggest pop stars. I will say that it was brilliant marketing by Capitol to release the remix with Kanye West, even though I personally liked the original better. The only downside to this song was the terrible and pointless video which showed Katy floating around in space in various outfits for almost five minutes. This is the first of two songs by Katy Perry on the chart.

45. Taylor Swift- Back to December

As I already said, in general I am not a big Taylor Swift fan, so it is really strange that I am putting another one of her songs in the Top 50. However, I found it very interesting how "Back to December" was a slow and melancholy ballad as well as an extremely catchy mainstream hit. It also definitely portrayed one of her strongest vocals yet, coupled with some very meaningful lyrics that I didn't know she was capable of writing. All in all, I was very impressed. This is the last of two songs by Taylor Swift on the chart.

44. Katy Perry- Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)

Ah, yes. The song that caused meltdowns throughout the pop community when Capitol's interesting tactic of making a remix and discounting the original gave her a fifth #1 from her album Teenage Dream, tying Michael Jackson's record. In the complete and utter mess surrounding its release and marketing, many people failed to recognize what a great song "Last Friday Night" was. Generic? Sure. Predictable? Maybe. But was it so wrong, after making such risky single choices as "Firework" and "E.T.", for Katy Perry to release a song that was certain to smash? I think not. This is the last of two songs by Katy Perry on the chart.

43. Diddy-Dirty Money- Coming Home

I don't like P. Diddy very much, and I was definitely not here for the mess that was "Hello Good Morning", so you can imagine how I thought I would feel about this song when it first came out. However, "Coming Home" gave me likely the biggest surprise of the year, because it turned out to be an epic masterpiece. People were always saying that Diddy ruined a perfectly good hook, and believe me I said that about many of Diddy's singles over the past ten years or so, but "Coming Home" was different, because its lyrics showcased Diddy's life story. The first time I heard the song, I was unprepared for how amazing it would be and it really emotionally affected me. Definitely one of my favorite rap songs of the year. This is the only song by Diddy-Dirty Money on the chart.

42. 30 Seconds to Mars- Closer to the Edge

30 Seconds to Mars, aka one of the greatest and most underrated rock bands of the 2000s, returned from a three-year hiatus in 2009 with the album This is War, and with it came the epic pop-rock masterpiece "Closer to the Edge". It was very interesting how it took almost a year after its initial release for CTTE to break into the mainstream; its commerciality was immediately obvious. Everything, from the slow, whispered verses to the loud, almost anthemic chorus, was perfect. It should have been the biggest hit of 30STM's career, and it's a shame that radio and iTunes buyers weren't able to catch on to such a fantastic song. This is the only song by 30 Seconds to Mars on the chart.

41. Britney Spears- Till the World Ends

The main thing that has always kept me from being a Britney fan is that she is inconsistent. For every good single she released, it seemed like there was a bad one there to accompany it. So it was fitting that after "Hold It Against Me" was very bad, to follow it up "Till the World Ends" was very good. Where HIAM failed (dubstep? Really Britney?), TTWE succeeded in every way. The chorus was excellent, the musical accompaniment was catchy rather than annoying (something I feel Britney's struggled mightily with over the years), and her voice sounded genuine and not heavily autotuned like it often is. The best single of the Femme Fatale era so far. This is the last of two songs by Britney Spears on the chart.

Oh by the way I'm adding a Worst Songs list to this. It's five of the singles I just couldn't stand this year, and it will be posted sometime later this week.

I haven't been in a serious relationship yet so that's probably why. Her lyrics are mainly written for teenage girls which is something that kind of turned me off in songs like "Love Story" and "Fifteen". Anyone can be her fan, but plain and simple, all I'm saying is that's the reason I'm usually not.

Worst Songs of 2011

5. Big Sean feat. Nicki Minaj- Dance (A$$)

Before this mess of a song (if you can call it that

), I had no reason to hate Big Sean. 2011 was a huge year for him, and I remained indifferent towards him during his first and second singles, "My Last" and "Marvin & Chardonnay". However, I hope this was just a one-time thing for him, because if he continues on this path, he will be well on his way to becoming the next Soulja Boy Tell'em. The chorus just involves repeating the word "ass" over and over again about 250 times. Who would find that appealing in any way?

The rapping skill he showed in "My Last" was completely gone; on "Dance" he just sounded lazy and uninterested. Not even Nicki could save this piece of ********. I hope Big Sean gets it back together because I am not, in any way, here for "Dance".

4. Jeremih feat. 50 Cent- Down On Me

Such an unoriginal, bland, tasteless song as this was the last thing I expected to smash in 2011. After all, since when was Jeremih relevant in any way after "Birthday Sex"?

In my opinion, he should have just stopped there. Unlike Big Sean, there is not much I can find to explain of why I hate this song so much. I can say, the lyrics are just

Jeremih's flat vocal performance does absolutely nothing for the song. And I swear Jeremih is one of the most forgettable singers in the history of music, by the time "Down On Me" was over, I had already almost forgotten it, and thank God for that.

3. Wiz Khalifa- Black and Yellow

Trust me, I am not here to hate on every single rap song that smashed this year. 2011 contained many surprisingly great rap songs, and you will see several of them high on my chart. However, "Black and Yellow" is a song that I just don't understand the appeal of.

Songs like this demonstrate that Wiz doesn't know a thing about writing even mildly creative lyrics. Sure, hip-hop isn't known for its amazingly profound lyrics, but a hook comprised of "Yeah, uh huh you know what it is, everything I do, I do it big"? Clichéd much? I can't stand songs that just repeat the title in the chorus, especially in that monotone rapping style that Wiz has.

I sincerely hope he doesn't choose to just go mainstream and abandon doing hip-hop for the joy of it, but "Black and Yellow" was a huge step in the wrong direction.

2. Pitbull feat. Ne-Yo, Afrojack & Nayer- Give Me Everything

On the second single of his album Planet Pit, completely mediocre and overrated rapper Pitbull chose to team with the grating, almost annoying voice of Ne-Yo, and the result was predictably awful. Pitbull's first #1 on the Billboard Hot 100?

I remember on the week it had the chance to go #1, hoping and praying that "Rolling In the Deep" would stay there, because I was desperate for a new #1, but even more desperate for Pitbull not to top the chart.

Anything LMFAO released>>>>>>>>>>this terrible song. Call me delusional, I refuse to change.

1. Dev- In the Dark

It must be explained to me why people like it, because I just don't get it. From that endlessly annoying saxophone riff, to likely the stupidest song lyrics written all year, to the disturbing and weird music video...where was the appeal?

A completely desperate and hopelessly misguided attempt to capitalize on the current dance craze. I will say, I got endless pleasure seeing it blocked from the Hot 100 Top 10 week after week.
