Yeah well then we'll just disagree, cause I do.

However, that doesn't mean no other male pop singer can't or won't achieve that title of being a legend in the near future. Michael can't and won't be replaced, that's set and stone, same goes for Madonna.

I think only time will tell. New generations will create their own legends and icons...and as time goes on the youth of the day will forget more and more about the icons of the past.
I am curious to see what the landscape of pop music looks like in 50 years.

The term legend is sooo overused in these parts.
Michael Jackson, Madonna, Paul McCartney, Bruce Springsteen....those guys are legends. They impacted not only music but culture and society.
Mariah and Janet are not legends (never strayed from one type of music, not famous and popular enough outside America, haven't made that big an impact on culture...many young people don't know any songs by either), neither will Usher or Katy Perry. Beyonce maybe, as might be Britney and Eminem. But a long time has to pass for one to be able to say that.

I disagree with some of your points; not all. And this younger generation doesn't know a McCartney or Bruce Springsteen song. How often are they brought up on here?

That's the younger generation's fault.
As much as I hate to cosign with Greasy, and as much as I love Mariah, he's right.
He's so right.
The people who are in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame? LEGENDS.
Others will get there soon enough.
I don't see it in the cards for the thread topic though.

The problem is that he has been able to maintain success, but never really set trends or ever accomplish something that will give him a legacy. He will be known as a successful artist, but never a legend unless he pulls off something big to not only maintain what he has done, but push him to the next level

No. Hell no.
Usher's problem was that he's not innovative, at ALL. He's not very creative or crafty.
Musically, he just coasts along with whatever's hot and never takes much risks and doesnt even have his own sound.
even his videos are boring. ALL of his videos are about chasing a girl in the club. It was SO much he could have done with the "little freak" video, but he kept it basic.
This is where I give the edge to Justin Timberlake.

How the hell can you say Janet isnt a legend but say Britney is?
Britney is a CLONE of Janet.
Post invalid.

No. Usher is in no way original. He emulates past legends and hops on to trends when it's convenient for his career. Not a legend.

He was on his way after Confessions but the album after that really stalled any momentum he had. RvR had some success, but the music was pretty disappointing and generic.
Justin Timberlake will most likely be viewed as a "legend" from this generation before Usher. He just needs to get off his ass and record some more!

Yes, this is my problem with Usher as well. He has always played it safe, took from artists before him (not that it's a problem) and just doesn't set himself apart from the rest.
And thanks for bringing up his video fetishes with clubs.
I think Justin has to prove himself as well. After two albums, I still do not know who he is as an artist, and he seems like the type who won't put out many albums.

And give Janet some credit. She has too many clones, have been praised by critics, etc. to not be given credit. I think the whole Superbowl thing tarnished her legacy and that's why people won't give her credit. Before that, everyone was riding her.

I didn't say Britney was a legend. I said she might become one. Same goes for Janet, I wouldn't be surprised if in 10-15 years she's viewed as a legend. But right now, she's been ellegible for the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame for 4 years and hasn't been nominated once. She's on a world tour, but compared to people like Roger Waters and Madonna she's doing really small venues. She's a great artist with an important and influential legacy...but LEGEND is like the biggest category one can be in...I don't use the term lightly.

I think her image was tarnished. Had that Superbowl incident not happened, I think she would have been in a much better position at getting into RNROF. Her albums were praised by critics --- at least four of them, and she was even taken more seriously than artists like Whitney, Mariah and Celine from an artistic standpoint. That's unfortunate though.

It's a shame "Yeah!" is the closest to being THAT song for Usher.
It's so terribly dated, I'd even say it's counterpart "Goodies" has held up better with time.
Keep it lite on Ush tho, y'all gone cause Beam to drink & ravage this thread.

You think so? IMO it's 'You Make Me Wanna' or 'You Don't Have To Call'
