S&M was already at #2 when the remix gave it a SMALL edge to go #1. If it was a standalone release, it wouldn't have had enough juice to do any significant charting. The song also fell like a rock when the week and initial buzz ended.

Now, now, let's not exaggerate. If the song had been released from the get go as a Britney collab, with a music video and all, it could very well have gone #1, too.

If it did only "small" it was because 'S&M' was already a 3 months old single by the time the remix was released, there wasn't that much more people willing to buy it anyway.
