I was about 14 years old in 1994.

Arguably, the biggest at that time was Mariah, hands down. Whitney's "Bodyguard" stint was around 1992-93 and after that, she wasn't shown too much on MTV or heard often on the radio. I clearly remember Mariah being EVERYWHERE. Not a fan of hers, but everyone at school was.

Madonna was popular, but nowhere near big ass force as the 80s - while you'd like to think her sales are indicative of her reigning popularity, in truth, a lot of people were turned off by E-rotica. "I'll remember" was a good hit, but not the force of Mariah's singles. Bedtime stories, while critically acclaimed, was not as widely celebrated as you think. "Take a Bow" was her only HUGE hit there.

Janet Jackson's "janet" album was still riding a bit high, but the latter singles (past "again") were not as huge.

I'd say other acts were also dominating the scene - Ace of Base, Gin Blossoms, all those random Eurodance acts (Real Mccoy, Culture Beat).

i feel like madonna/mariah would be a gaga/katy situation.

a lot of people would be disenchanted with madonna, but at the same time a lot would stick by her because - essentially - she delivers what atrlers want more.

mariah had the #1's, but her albums in general were seen as fodder and she wasn't perceived to be as boundary-pushing as madonna. i still think madonna would have more diehards on a place like atrl.

and ofc a year later there would be a huge alanis bandwagon.

Whitney had eclipsed Madonna by 1994. TBG was already at 33 million at that point. Debut and follow up combined come to about 45 million. Throw in IYBT, and Whitney was easily at 80 million albums worldwide.

IDK if my receipts are inflated or not, but I go by what the label says.

Perhaps "Unbreak My Heart" was the only jam that was massively played in 1996, at least from what I remember hearing (on the radio, and boy did I listen to radio EVERY MINUTE). Braxton's major airplay/peak was in 1993/1994 with her lead album.

Celine Dion was probably more massive in the 95-99 era, especially that putrid Titanic song.

Mariah was still the biggest player in 1994, followed by the Eurodance acts.
