I didn't diss Whitney. All I said is that she made I Will Always Love You more about the vocal acrobatics, and you can blame her for everyone who wants to try to show off their own vocal acrobatics going straight to IWALY. She's a phenomenal singer! She just doesn't produce as much emotion as Dolly does with the song. At least not imo.
You also can't even deny Whitney made the song her own - a lot of people most likely still don't know it's a cover.

I don't think she was trying to show off vocal acrobatics, I think she legit just gave a great vocal performance.
It just so happens that the song is now used as one of the all time vocal showcases.
But she's definitely no Xtina in terms of trying too hard to show off her voice.
Dolly's version is more intimate, but that's arguably because of her connection to the song.
Nobody outside the country world in America knows its a cover though, she really did own it.

It's quite an interesting argument though.
There's something about "technically perfect" voices that I find it really hard to connect with.
Mariah, Whitney, Leona, Christina, Ariana...
It's like they hit the notes so perfectly, that there's just no emotion in them. There's something amazing about hearing the fragility and pain in a singers voice that really emotes a million times more authentic.
Obviously not for all their songs, there are some Mariah songs where she emotes like hell. But more as a general statement.
But like, Kelly is really great technical singer, but her tone is more earthy and raw, there's something vulnerable in her vocals when she belts a sad song, it just kicks you in the heart. Then there's people like Janis who just throw all the rules out and each note drips with emotion.
There are very few singers who can actually pull off an authentic emotive/sad ballad well.

Did you include audio? If so, that's probably why. Katy fans don't want any audio out there until Katy is ready I suppose!

Mess I knew someone was gonna point that out. Yeah Xtina often messes up, but when she's on point, she's very... I don't know the word, robotic/technical in her delivery.
And yeah I was actually thinking of My All in my head, I think it's because she uses her lower register.
Maybe that's it, the higher the register, the less emotion? That's my problem with Leona too.

I don't remember where I saw it, but I think Dolly was not very fond of the song. Something along the lines of Whitney being on record stating that she thanks Dolly for "writing such a beautiful song", and Dolly replying to the quote by thanking Whitney for "making them lots of money with her cover". Hilarious, even the writer knew the song was ****
