Whitney's version sucks too. I think the song is just... not salvageable from the get go, though Whitney's take manages to make it worse.

I don't remember where I saw it, but I think Dolly was not very fond of the song. Something along the lines of Whitney being on record stating that she thanks Dolly for "writing such a beautiful song", and Dolly replying to the quote by thanking Whitney for "making them lots of money with her cover". I don't think Dolly hates it. She performs it all the time, has included it in multiple movies of hers and has rereleased it on several of her albums through the years.


That's just her sense of humor, joking about the song making her millions.


And Elvis wanted to sing IWALY, but Dolly wouldn't let him because back in the day it was standard to give him like 50% of the publishing rights to any song he sang and Dolly was like "No, no, no!" Feminist queen ensuring she gets PAID for her work.

But LOL the company has been building up to this for a while, now. They did that 'Saving Mr. Banks' movie with Emma Thompson and Tom Hanks a few years ago to show how Walt Disney persuaded a reluctant P. L. Travers to let him make the original movie. But the Banks movie is classic Disney revisionism. They make it look like Disney was so nice to her, and that she loved the film.

But in reality Disney basically bullied Travers into letting them make the film, and she hated it so much that she forbade them from ever making another film. I guess she can't protest the new sequel, though, considering she's dead and all.
