I think that people are surprised that it's not doing better because it's Justin Timberlake, NOT because it's an R&B song. This has nothing to do with race; people say it's "flopping" because JT is a bigger star than any other R&B singer. I think they're implying that it should be doing better because of his previous success with Suit & Tie, Mirrors, and The 20/20 Experience.

I just made a thread about that yesterday

People are so used to big-name pop stars to surge to #1 within hours of release, and when it doesn't happen, it's automatically a flop. We Found Love and Diamonds are two great examples of that. She shut a lot of people up on here when they finally went to #1

And I can't at people claiming Justin is flopping just because he's #11 on singles chart. The song will reach top10 in upcoming days, and who actually cares? The album is #2 on iTunes (with another version charting) only with pre-orders.

The song is just the lead single from a re-release and the third single from the set though. Diamonds was initially doing poorly on iTunes and we know what happened. Locked Out of Heaven was initially performing tragically on iTunes and we know what happened.

I just had a thought. If the single version of Blurred Lines gets removed during album release week, like what happened with "Right Round" in '09, someone else would have a chance at number one on iTunes. Probably Miley or JT.

Well, they'd run the risk of another one of their artists (Gaga) being stuck at number two behind Robin. Plus, they'll really want people to buy the album anyway. His ariplay + streaming would be so high at that point that he could literally sell 0 copies and still chart extremely high. Remember, singles tend to get a streaming boost during album release week, too. And crossover hits like this do motivate album sales, so there will also be a complete my album effect in there too. Not as drastic as Taylor's, but still.

Besides, Interscope isn't exactly the best label out there anymore.
