Wrong. He started his turnaround the year before with Killer Joe/Magic Mike/Bernie - getting a BFCA nom, getting an Indie Spirit Award, winning major critics' awards NSFC/NYFCC - and in 2013 continued it with Wolf of Wall Street/Mud.

Movie roles are what give Oscars, not TV roles.

Not sure about winning, but Jake totally deserved a nominee for his role in Nightcrawler. It's better than most of the nominated performances that year, including the Eddie Redmayne.

But of course Oscar would prefer those biographic roles

Iron Lady is at 54 and yet somehow it got Meryl an Oscar. It's not unprecedented that an acting Oscar goes to a superb performance in an average movie.

That being said, he should've been getting it with Nightcrawler. Curious about what will HW do with Southpaw this season.
