I know it does sound a little weird to say that "Born This Way" was a 4xPlatinum album because right now 4xplatinum means massive success. But look at "Stripped" from 2002 that era was big but it wasn't that HUGE in the US and it still scanned 4xplatinum after coming off a succesful era with "Christina Aguilera" just like Gaga was coming off "The Fame".
I believe back then twice as many albums were sold each year in the United States and that DOES take a toll on each individual artist. Adele is something that hasn't happened in the past 20 years and it could be another 20 years before it happens again
