I don't think he is talking about the need for certifications to be "changed", but rather from a labels viewpoint...they gauge minimum success on their label with Gold, as compared to when it was Platinum or go home.

I will say certifications should decrease for albums. The market for albums just isn't strong.

But gold isn't the new platinum

I know it does sound a little weird to say that "Born This Way" was a 4xPlatinum album because right now 4xplatinum means massive success. But look at "Stripped" from 2002 that era was big but it wasn't that HUGE in the US and it still scanned 4xplatinum after coming off a succesful era with "Christina Aguilera" just like Gaga was coming off "The Fame".

I believe back then twice as many albums were sold each year in the United States and that DOES take a toll on each individual artist. Adele is something that hasn't happened in the past 20 years and it could be another 20 years before it happens again

Labels need to grow some balls and properly think about what their collective next move should be to deal with the current and developing music industry, not desperately clutch to the past. This guy is right but re-classifying certifications achieves nothing other than making themselves temporarily feel better. Does he propose they keep doing that until sales are next to nothing and they go bust?

Adele's success shows it's possible to sell over 25 million albums today when you have international mass-crossover and multi-generational appeal with insane hype...but you can't put much more weight behind it than that and presume it highlights the weaknesses of other labels/artists.

I have a nasty feeling 21's success has just made labels even less inclined to try and solve the rapid decline of the industry because they'll think it's merely a case of finding the right artist to convince people into buying music again.
