I was shocked because 2002 was when teen pop died and urban pop was the thing.
But people were turned off by the message and the visual

OT: it was a flop chart wise but it proves charts don't matter at all.

Well 9/11 had a major impact on the entire world. I agree but I don't see how it had a major impact on Slave for you's peak and I'm not being funny.
I started looking at the billboard charts in 1999 so I was aware of it.
Slave for you was teased in late August before her MTV diary was aired
2001 MTV vmas were the week of Labor day (back then it was the first week of September because i remember her 2000, 2001 and 2002 performances were always talked about the first week of school)
The video came out towards the end of September even though the song was released a day or two before the VMAs.
Songs like Hero by enrique iglesias, Mariah's Hero and Whitney star spangled banner took over the airwaves but the real issue was that
Britney and team looked out for more money vs going with clear channel sponsorship for the DWAD tour.
So radio couldn't not play the hottest act out. So they day parted it meaning they'd play the song mainly in the evenings and during times where the audience is less and some stations didn't play it at all.
I remember radio and records had add dates etc.
It peaked the week after her album release because she was promoting and the song jumped from 40 to 27 on the charts.
No single in physical form,
No clear channel sponsor for tour
Day parting
And she wasn't the most played artist on radio to begin with. Her first BOMT/Crazy/Oops and sometimes got a lot of play but she didn't need radio so her team never invested payola into the stations to make sure she was played nonstop.
9/11 did change the charts and a few songs were played Enrique benefited the most because Hero was released at the perfect time.
It did change the charts but I don't think to the extent that Slave for you would have gone top 10.
Too many factors went against it.
