I think she's struggling on two fronts. One, there's the ageism thing in pop. I definitely don't agree with it - in fact I think it's completely awful - but it seems that pop only accepts teens and young 20-somethings singing frankly about sexuality. Xtina and Janet are two examples of women on the wrong side of this bias.
I think another dynamic possibly working against her - and this is just what I hear, not what I've seen - is that she hasn't completely endeared herself to some in the business. It takes a village to be successful - promoters, producers, label execs, agents etc. If you end up with a reputation as being difficult or under-appreciative, it doesn't help you when you're in between hits. Those are the times when you most need the best folks in the biz to want to help you.
Again, I've just heard these things second hand. She was nothing but sweet to me in person.
So what does she need to do if she wants to make a comeback? It all begins and ends with the quality and positioning of the songs. Id say party/Club songs but more upbeat/positive. I'd also like to hear a ballad or two that can stand next to Beautiful. Songs about empowerment and overcoming adversity.
Then she needs to work. Endless promo. A run of small Club dates to reconnect and build buzz. Radio promo out the butt. That sort of thing.
I think the most important question at this point - for her or for anyone in her situation - is, does she really want it?

Perfect answer. She could easily comeback but she hardly promoted Lotus - which had 2 big potential hits: Let There Be Love & Just a Fool. Your Body could've been bigger than it was too. Blank Page is one of her best ballads as well. Do you think Lotus's cover turned people off?

She continues to be successful because she's a strong writer, she has been honest with her fans through good time and bad, and she brings an artistic conviction not a lot of other pop stars can match. She's brave in a way that isn't shtick or manufactured controversy. It was brave to perform that dance routine for Try - brave and beautiful. It was brave to spin suspended 50 feet in the air above the grammys - and it was completely awesome that she dripped water all over the suits below.
Any way. I could go on. I just think she keeps it a little realer than most in a world and age that needs more real.

And another spot-on post.

Do you know anything about the new streaming service that iTunes is cooking up and what new things would it bring to the streaming game? I'm really excited about it because I hate having multiple softwares to stream & buy music.

On the phone was Rammstein. We talked a lot about spanking.
In person was Rob Halford. He came out to MTV like four days later.
First cover story was mos def for cmj back in maybe 99? First big pop star in person would have been no doubt I think, probably around 2001.

Mine is Missy Elliott's "Work It." Not only one of contemporary rap's great performances, but ten weeks stuck at #2 is just plain cruel.
|
Great question. Either missy - who holds the record for most weeks at no 2 - or any big credence Clearwater revival hit. They had five songs go to no 2 and never got to 1. Maybe that's why Fogerty is always cranky?
Waiting for a girl like you/foreigner also had ten weeks at no 2 but never got the top spot.
