I don't know, Bruce. I just interpret it as saying that no matter whether you're gay or straight, the emotion that love encapsulates is the same four letter word for everyone. So the love that gay men and lesbians feel towards one another shouldn't be treated as inferior to the love shared by a heterosexual couple.
I don't think it necessarily turns a blind eye to there being obvious differences, because at the heart of it all, we are all unique. To me, it doesn't say the gays and straights are the same, but that we all have the capacity to feel. And one thing that ties us together is the fact that we love. Not who we love, but the love itself.
And also, he's saying that because our love isn't inferior, our rights shouldn't be as well.
Is he gay? No. But why should we condemn him for giving his sentiment that we should be seen as people, at the heart of it all. The song isn't perfect, no, but it's a step forward in a genre that shamelessly refers to us as ******s as though it were a casual term.
