The psychology is actually not that hard to comprehend. People want to be part of that person's essence.
I think humans are just wired to "worship", if you will. Ever since the first man wrote obsessive poems, songs, stories, books, about a woman who vigorously rejected him.

It just takes different forms, some are driven by money, prestige, love, deficiency, etc.
The only thing you can really criticize, I think, is the productivity (or lack thereof) that results from that worship. Which is different for everyone.
If the next person to cure a major disease is hugely motivated by "Flawless" and they bought all the merchandise with the song lyrics, etc. who's to say their stanning was in vain?
