Not that the original tweet was overly horrid or anything, although i see why it could be misconstruded as such. His tweets since, however, have been ridic and the fact that I'm siding with Tyler Oakley on anything is really flipping annoying.

Even if he wasn't aware what was going on with DD before that tweet, he certainly became aware of it afterwards and if he truly didn't know about their history of homophobic comments and doesn't agree with them, why doesn't he just say that rather then having this vague meltdown which will only makes things worse for himself?

3. He is handling this very wrong, but if I were in his shoes I'd be pissed off and trying to set the record straight as well. I mean if he is just now finding out what all happened from the fans....
4. Everyone gets too upset and freaks out over a little misunderstanding or poor choice of words. Now, if he said "GO DUCK PEOPLE, SCREW THE GAYS AND AFRICAN AMERICANS" then you have a right to meltdown.

Pretty much this. And while I've never thought of "family values" as code for anything (since the DD people were known on their show to be promoting family and duck calls) I can see very much how poorly the original tweet would read to Europeans who have no idea what DD is beyond the GQ interview and to 1D fans in the US who are gay and had the same thought pop into their head.

The stans "defending" his actions on Twitter need to take a nap, however, and let him deal witht he repercussions in the morning. Going after bloggers and journalists who's job (or "job") is to report stuff like random tweets to the fans just puts a bad taste in the general public's mouth.
