It has only worked on a handful of occasions. The only examples I can think of it working in recent times were Rihanna, Maroon 5, and Taylor (though even that is arguable since her music has always had pop elements in it to begin with). Every other recent example-Shakira, J.Lo, Britney, Gaga, Jessie J, Nicki, Usher, Ne-Yo, etc. didn't end well.
