Yes, I agree. However, HIV and other STDs are transmitted much easier through anal sex. Couple that with the hook up culture that is so prevalent among gay men, and you have astronomical STD statistics when compared to the straight population. Facts, sorry. Maybe control your libidos better?
I'm not disagreeing with what you're saying about hook-up culture, but as someone who's only been with one parter and knowing I'm clean, I don't want to be penalised for that. The stigma of the hook up culture is being fuelled on to me, even though I don't act that way, that's an issue. A straight woman can hook up all the same, and while the risk of STD's spreading may be lower, she's not bending any rule stopping her from donating at all.
HIV isn't testable until 3-6 months after infection
So no, gays should stay away. HIV being overwhelmingly within the gay community is a fact due to scientific reasons -- it is an unfortunate reality we can't deny
By that logic, everyone should be banned from donating blood.

Oh, interesting. I didn't know that. Then again, I'm not that educated on AIDS/HIV.
But knowing this now, maybe the rule should stay in place.
Enough people donate blood at certain intervals and quantities that I see no issue with being able to test every sample given regardless of when something "shows up". They already test it anyways. People against gays donating blood are simply ignorant, and using dumb statistics to back up their silly agendas.
I didn't know gay was the only term given to a man who had sex with another man....*insert sarcasm* I know plenty of bisexual men or bicurious men or guys who identify as straight but still do stuff with other married/straight men and don't consider themselves gay....at the end of the day their guidelines are outdated to reflect the fear of AIDS from the 80s.....anyone can have HIV/AIDS and a big number of donors probably won't admit to having M2M experiences
By that logic, everyone should be banned from donating blood.
um no
Gay people account for 81% of the HIV diagnoses
this is because the type of sex we participate in is miles more risky, which has increased HIV cases.. so the amount of HIV cases + the nature of our sex = the perfect situation for HIV to thrive
Isnt the blood to be delivered supposed to be tested first? They would've rejected the sample if there were HIV so yes, gay men should be allowed to donate blood
I felt so insulted seeing the question the first time I donated. Clueless, I marked Yes the girl told me to just change the answer if it wasn't a problem since I was negative.
"If you are a woman who has had sex with a man who has ever had sex with another man."
Wait, so if a woman sleeps with a bisexual man at any point in her life she's banned from giving blood forever, even if the guy hasn't slept with a man for years prior?
That messy rule needs fixed before the 12 months gay one.
