At the same time, those are more of the exceptions and not the rules. Just because you
can have a major comeback does not mean you
will have a major comeback at some point. So the same way it's not wise to count someone out, it's also not wise to expect them to have a big rebound. People tend to overvalue the worth of a #1 single and also underestimate the difficulty of getting a #1 single. Lady Gaga could have a big comeback and still never get a #1 single. She could also manage a #1 hit but still continue to fade.
Gaga could have a big Poker Face smash again, but it might peak at #2 just like how Poker Face almost got blocked between Right Round and Boom Boom Pow. Or she could have a big Die Young sized hit that manages to slip into the #1 spot for a week instead of getting blocked at #2 due to weaker competition or something; but then have the era crumble from that point on. It's about the material
and the competition. Guessing 'never' and guessing '1-2 years' are both ridiculous predictions to a similarly ridiculous question. A question such as "Can X get a #1 single in the future?" is better as then you judge if you think the artist still wants to make the same type of radio candy pop smashes or if she'll move on to exploring other musical possibilities (or even if the pop scene might move on to a different type of genre that dominates). "When is X going #1 again?" is just silly.
