Britney was more of a 1999 phenomenon, not 1998, and 'My All' was the worst song on Butterfly and Mariah's worst song to go #1. 'Breakdown' was fantastic though. Otherwise, great thread!

Definately agree for today's state of pop music that Britney debuted that year and I <333ed Christina Aguilera's "Reflection" mind you, as well as the beginning of N*Sync, Destiny's Child, Spice Girls...etc. Also, "The Boy Is Mine" is one of my favorite songs of all time.
EDIT: Mariah Carey's worst single to go #01 was NOT "My All." ;p

1998 was indeed a fabulous year, especially musically.
Some other huge hits from the year that have yet to be mentioned...
- "Truly, Madly, Deeply" by Savage Garden
- "Good Riddance (Time of Your Life)" by Green Day
- "Bittersweet Symphony" by The Verve
- "3 A.M." by Matchbox 20
- "Sex & Candy" by Marcy Playground
- "Never Ever" by All Saints
- "Are You That Somebody?" by Aaliyah
- "Thank U" and "Uninvited" by Alanis Morissette
- "My Way" by Usher
- "Ghetto Supastar" by Pras, Ol' Dirty Bastard and Mya
- "Flagpole Sitta" by Harvey Danger
- "Inside Out" by Eve 6
- "Frozen" by Madonna
- "Too Close" by Next
- "Anytime" by Brian McKnight
- "Crush" by Jennifer Paige
- "I Get Lonely" by Janet Jackson
- "I Think I'm Paranoid" by Garbage
- "Dammit" by Blink-182
- "Karma Police" by Radiohead
- "Adia" by Sarah McLachlan
- "Touch It" by Monifah
- "Gone Till November" by Wyclef Jean
- "This Kiss" by Faith Hill
- "I Don't Want To Wait" by Paula Cole (Late 1997/Early 1998)
As for 1998, I was 11/12 years old during the year and I remember it like it was just yesterday. I got the Internet for the first time in July 1998 and I can remember watching MTV during the middle of the night that whole Summer and I can still remember the Music Videos that they would have on rotation during that time. Every night they would constantly show the videos for "Iris" by Goo Goo Dolls, "Torn" by Natalie Imbruglia, "One Week" by Barenaked Ladies, "The Boy Is Mine" by Brandy & Monica, "My Way" by Usher, "Ghetto Supastar" by Pras, "Inside Out" by Eve 6, "The Way" by Fastball, etc... God, I miss those days.
And Britney Spears was infact a 1999 phenomenon. "Baby One More Time" first started getting some play on MTV around November/December 1998, but it wasn't until January 1999 that it blew up and became huge and that carried through most of Early 1999. I can still remember seeing the video for the first time back in December 1998 on MTV2 and I had no idea who she was because the song was brand new but I remember thinking she was hot. Now here I am almost 10 years later and she's iconic. It's crazy.
Oh, and the Billboard Hot 100 from 1998 is a little misleading considering the two biggest songs that year were not eligible to chart on the Hot 100 due to them not having commercial singles released at the time. The songs i'm talking about are "Torn" by Natalie Imbruglia (Which was the #1 Radio Hit throughout the Summer of 1998) and "Iris" by Goo Goo Dolls (Which was the #1 Radio Hit throughout the Fall of 1998)

^ this came out in 97, but it was still popular in 98.

Actually, "Save Tonight" by Eagle Eye Cherry came out in Late Summer of 1998 and was a Huge Radio Hit around Late 1998/Early 1999. So it's definitely a 1998 song.

"My All" Mariah's worst #1?
Um, "Touch My Body", maybe? Is that possible?

Elton's John's "Candle in the Wind 1997" was ending its reign.

Well...out of all of Mariah's #1's, I'd say 'My All' deserved it the least and it IS one of her least remarkable singles. It's just one of those songs that I don't think anyone remembers distinctly...it's bland, schmaltzy, and lethargic. 'Butterfly' is still her best album, nuanced and somber, but 'My All' was pretty cheesy.

That's just nonsense. And believe me, it's more remarkable than "Dreamlover" , "Thank God I Found You", "Don't Forget About Us" and obviously, "Touch My Body". It's one of her best ballads and a career definer as I said before. You're just stating your very own opinion and it's wrong.

I wish I was musically conscious that year. I was 5-6.
I miss this, so much.
1998, such a fantastic year. Low gas prices, good MTV, amazing music, no housing crisis, no Bush.

LOL. They were really good back then! I use to annoy people by playing that "Castle's in the Wind" or whatever that song was, I was obsessed.

This is all I need to say! All Saints were one of the best bands of all time. People may not think they were as good as Spice Girls or Destiny's Child, but they made a crossover from Pop into R&B. There music was very unique at the time, and there songs were huge. Never Ever became one of the biggest hits in UK history. It also reached the top 5 in the United States. Also reaching number one in Australia for 7 weeks, and 5 weeks in New Zealand. And spent over 30 weeks in the UK charts! One of the longest times in the chart at that very time! They were one of my favourite bands, and this was one of my albums of all time. Heaven from the album was astonishingly beautiful, I mean seriously beautiful! And some of the other great classics that year, I mean there truly has never been a better year for music, so many different mixes of songs! Absouletely amazing! I truly miss the 90's, especially 98 even though I was only 4, I loved music so much for that age

The only problem is that "Candle In The Wind 1997" got hardly any Radio Airplay. It was only #1 on the Hot 100 due to Princess Diana's death, so people went out and continually bought the single to keep it at #1, and it blocked Usher's "You Make Me Wanna..." from being a #1 Hit (Which was HUGE on the Radio in Late 1997)
I don't know if you guys look at the Billboard Hot 100 Airplay chart or not (You can find the entire archive of #1's from the Airplay chart on Wikipedia, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of...0_Airplay_hits) But it's alot more accurate for which songs were big at the time as opposed to the Hot 100. You'll notice that for all those weeks that "Candle In The Wind 1997" was #1 on the Hot 100 chart, the songs "Fly" by Sugar Ray and "Tubthumping" by Chumbawamba were #1 in Radio Airplay.
And since we're on the topic of 1998, here's the list of #1 Radio Airplay Hits from 1998...
- January 3 - "Tubthumping" - Chumbawamba
- January 10 - "Tubthumping" - Chumbawamba
- January 17 - "Tubthumping" - Chumbawamba
- January 24 - "Tubthumping" - Chumbawamba

- March 7 - "My Heart Will Go On" - Céline Dion
- March 14 - "My Heart Will Go On" - Céline Dion
- March 21 - "My Heart Will Go On" - Céline Dion
- March 28 - "My Heart Will Go On" - Céline Dion
- April 4 - "My Heart Will Go On" - Céline Dion

- September 5 - "Iris" - Goo Goo Dolls
- September 12 - "Iris" - Goo Goo Dolls

All Saints
"Pure Shores" , "Under The Bridge" and "Black Coffee" are classics. Even "Studio 1" was a great album and they put the Sugababes to shame with it.

^ I agree, I believe that All Saints were a much better girl group than Sugababes. They were unique, and stuck to their own brand of music. They weren't into the whole cheesy pop thing, they were indie/r&b/pop. They were added to festival lists and were amazing live. And were just like all the rock and indie groups at the time, only with a female line up. They have some of the best songs of the 90's, also their Saints & Sinners album was very good, but All Saints was a fantastic album, and I will always treasure that album til' the day I die. I'm thinking of having that as my funeral song, I know it's a bit early, but why not ! And Studio 1 was also another great album, Chick Fit was one of my favourite songs of last year. That song was ultra amazing
