I never implied that commercial success = icon. Carly Rae Jepsen has had commercial success (bless her). Maybe my french album comment was out of place .I said she was more of an icon because of her songs (My Heart Will Go On is one of the most well-known songs of all time and she has countless hits that are still heard today. Janet not so much), her voice (she is considered one of the best vocalists of all time and people travel from all over the world to hear her sing) and her tours. While I don't think commercial success makes one an icon, I think that tours do. Especially ones after an artist's peak. She has one of the most successful tours ever and, like I said before, people travel from everywhere to see her to this day.
I still hear Céline's name brought up all the time. I think she's much more a part of pop culture than Janet it who I only ever hear about in regards to her nipple.
Anyway, I'm off to bed.

You clearly stated a page back that Celine is more iconic for her 'continued success'
And dead @ you saying she's apart of pop culture more.. Most pop artists have cited Janet as inspirations, her big 4 albums are groundbreaking and have been sampled in many artists discographies and she has also been a fashion trendsetter. Most of Celines music is critically panned and there are so many joke parodies about MHWGO.
Also Celine, for as successful as she is, has really influenced no one, at least compared to her peers. Mariah and Whitney have been the vocal blueprints for the vocalists of last generation and upcoming, while Janet and Madonna are the female performing blueprints. I can't think of anyone that aspires to be Celine outside of Charice really.
And as for touring, so Metallica are bigger icons than Stevie Wonder because they tour better?
