if celine dion had never existed, popular music would be the exact same as it is now.
If janet jackson had never existed, 25+ years worth of pop and r&b stars from within the u.s.a. And outside of it would be changed because they wouldn't have jackson's template to lift from. That's influence.
+1 . But i love celine music better tho. SometIMES you need to be objective.thats what is missing on atrl.
At the end of the day I have seen todays biggest pop performers quote Janet as an influence, and the singers use Mariah and Whitney as the standard. All these talents shows and I rarely if ever see someone singing Celine, they are singing Whitney and Mariah MUCH more often. And to say she has no influence overseas, have you seen these pop girls overseas in Asia and Europe? Other than maybe the UK they aren't belting slow love ballads like Celine, they are serving sex and dancing and performing like JANET helped progress. Her influence is wide whether or not she was a major artist in those countries or not. After Janet came you not only had to sing, but you had to put on a show. Nobody was going to pay to see you stand for 2 hours.
Celine ain't done **** Iconic but the Titanic. Janet reinventied Choreogreography, the music video, her image, among a plethora of other things. Not to mention her WORLDWIDE sell out tours. Not Celine's LOCAL vegas stint.
So have a damn seat. Sure Celine sold more, but she also sung nothing but covers and run of the mill ballads. Where was her artistic growth? where was her changing image? The girls do what Janet did in yesteryear, nobody is selling or making money by doing what Celine did, and don't even try to quote Adele, Adele writes all her music, Celine never wrote crap.

Maybe you're just not acquainted with Celine's music so you don't recognize her songs being sung so often in talent show contests.
And Celine is extremely popular in Asia even more so than Janet. Honestly, I cant remember the last time Ive heard a Janet song on radio and tv here while a song even from Celine's "Christmas" album gets played here all year round on tv and radio. She's one of the most imitated vocalists and her songs one of the most covered. "The Prayer" alone was covered 33x already by various professional music artists around the world. Yes, Celine did not write a single song nor change the landscape of music. But she's a huge force in the 90's and that left a huge influence on a lot of vocalists today. She also introduce francophone music to a global audience. Her French albums sold a lot in non-French speaking countries.
And btw, Celine is BOTH the Queen of Las Vegas and the SECOND most successful female touring act of all time.

This tough one because they're both iconic. But If I had to choose I feel like Janet is the answer. Celine Dion has more sales and is more global, which is important but don't mean everything. A part of being an icon is also your influence and impact on music and pop culture which Celine kinda lacks in that dept. compared to Janet. Celine Dion influenced some vocalists but didn't really bring anything new to the table and was overshadowed by Mariah and Whitney in that area. Meanwhile Janet was a major trendsetter at her peak and pretty much set the basic blueprint for the modern pop star with her dancing, sexuality, performances and it's evident when you look at people like Rihanna, Ciara, Beyonce, Britney, etc. On top of that she has more iconic moments ( the fact that she's a Jackson, the 93 RS cover, and Nipplegate) compared to Celine's 1 (MHWGO)
