This is only a misconception. First of all, what was their breakthrough hit? That's Where Is The Love. Fergie barely sings in it, only doing some background vocals. So she had no impact on the success of the song at all. Then you have I Gotta Feeling, which became their most popular hit, and Fergie sings only a verse and some other background vocals while Will.i.am is the one singing most of the song. Meet Me Halfway is the song that had the most focus on Fergie, and it flopped in the U.S. And also, they've had the most success with The E.N.D. because of the awesome production, mostly done by Will.i.am.
Also, if Fergie is the reason why BEP is so popular, then why Wild Orchid never had that much success? She was the leader of that band and she was the one singing the most too. She even had a better voice back then. So yeah, it's not about Fergie, but about BEP's amazing style. A lot of people think that they got popular because of Fergie, while that was purely a coincidence. She just happened to be there while they made Where Is The Love. Songs like Let's Get It Started and Pump It are way more popular than Don't Lie or Don't Phunk With My Heart, and Fergie sings more on the latter two. Of course, Fergie contributed to the success of Shut Up too, but even if she would have never been officially in the band, that song would have still come out and had as much success. You could mention My Humps too, but you should know that Will.i.am is the one who produced the song and the one who wrote it, not Fergie.
So yeah, Will.i.am is the reason they have success. He's the one who evolved and became better as a producer and produced most of their hits. Fergie was successful in solo thanks to him again. Polow Da Don was a reason for her success too, but nowadays he's known for making Christina Aguilera flopped (he produced Not Myself Tonight and some other songs on Bionic). While you may not like Will.i.am as a rapper or whatever, you can't deny he is a very talented producer. He even got praised by Michael Jackson, Quincy Jones, Prince, Bono, and several other people.
I could go on and on about plenty of other things. Just look up Fallin' Up on youtube or some of their songs from Behind The Front and Bridging The Gap, and you'll see that most people say that "Fergie ruined the BEP", and that "they actually had talent back in the day" (not that I agree with that, but that's what most people think).
Wow. That was quite long, but anyway, I hope you get the point.
