I think the episode is great. It has tension and is like the darkest episode of the season. It definitely made me very excited for the finale, which was great but so rushed.

That could justify the series nomination IMO.

They don't submit episodes for Mini Series the voters are supposed the watch the whole series and then decide, but for shows like AHS (10+ episodes) they mainly watch first 4-6 episodes. Which makes Wes Bentley and John Carroll Lynch snubs even more saddening.

Jessica deserves her win, but Angela's and Denis' nominations are a bit of a mess. The technical aspects of the show were on point, and the crew deserves their nominations.

Freak Show was the weakest season, but I agree with what was said earlier. Its best moments are really highlights of the entire series (see "Orphans" and the character of Elsa Mars). The most frustrating part about Freak Show (and Coven, for that matter) is its squandered and unfulfilled potential. The unnecessary musical numbers (all except Jessica's), the mostly flat and static characters and the Neal Patrick Harris episodes in particular really killed a lot of the momentum.

Freak Show having the most nominations of any season, though. Hopefully it at least encourages Ryan to keep focusing on AHS as his critical darling.

A critical darling has critical acclaim. Emmy voters are not critics.

At the TCAs this year it was nommed for nothing. It scored in the 60s on Metacritic. It wasn't on a single year-end critics' T10 list for 2014.

True. Perhaps I worded my post incorrectly. I meant that, with Ryan taking on more projects like Scream Queens, Emmy nominations and awards might convince him to still dedicate just as much time toward AHS. Emmys look good for a director, even in less competitive categories.

And AHS is a critical darling. Freak Show is the only season that hasn't been praised as much.

"Orphans", "Edward Mordrake (Part 1)" and "Curtain Call" are the trinity of Freak Show, with "Blood Bath" following close behind, and they can easily stand up to the best episodes of the other seasons.

I will admit that "Curtain Call" does have some endings and twists that feel contrived and pulled from thin air, but its high points make up for it and the season ends nicely. It reaches a satisfying and emotionally fulfilling ending with most plot strings tied up, which is more than can be said for Murder House and Coven.

Can we just pretend that the NPH episodes never happened, though?
