I'm a UK ATRLer.
Under George Bush, you guys were absolutely hated. You were seen as dragging us into unnecessary wars and your leader was seen as ill-informed, badly educated, inarticulate and quite frankly, stupid. In Europe and especially the UK, we're far more liberal, so some Republican, right-wing and especially Neo-Conservative policy will never be taken well.
Under Obama, things have definitely gotten so much better. We see you more again as leaders of the world, rather than just leaders of your own cause. Our public are beginning to respect your presence once more.
For the future, I don't know. As the US declines in relevance and power, the EU may become more of a force. It might become less of a passive-active relationship, and more one of active cooperation on both sides. You definitely, definitely, definitely need to improve your environmental record as a matter of urgency, though. We see you honestly as amongst the wastrels of the world, using gas-guzzling cars to get around everywhere.

Time to clear a few things up.
1-English is STILL one of the most widely used languages in the world. Not only does the overwhelming majority of the USA speak in this language but the UK,Australia, and Canada also have the majority of their people use english as their language.
2-The recent two wars started under George Bush, one of the WORST presidents of the last 20 years. For those of you who don't know George Bush became abhorrent by many, especially in his second term after his dealing with Hurricane Katrina.
3-Colleges in here are not as bad as some of y'all make it out to be.Really.More emphasis is being put on STEM majors and Education majors than any other major out there. Also, the job force is getting a bit more competitive in the last few years, putting more favor towards people who have studied abroad and people who obtain Master's degrees.
4-Some of y'all can NOT make grammar reads about the US when I have seen less than perfect grammar used in this forum, from people of other countries, and the NERVE of some complaining about Americans being arrogant when some of y'all act as if your **** is better in every single way.It is NOT.I would MUCH rather live in the US with all of its flaws than to live in China where you have a communist government.

I very much agree, but I'll like to point out English is not the official language of the US. America doesn't have one.

It's like your state doesn't care about you, it's every man for himself kind of country. And my country is the opposite of that, I mean here health care, education and all that stuff is free. So we really don't agree with that stuff. It's so not right that a person should have to pay hundred thousands of dollars to get an education and when they're sick.
But mostly we view you guys as a country of stupid, ignorant obese people....

I can't really vote for any of your options because the correct one would be "sometimes positively, sometimes negatively", which isn't really the same as "neutrally" (as that implies indifference).
In summary the US is seen as a great nation which believes in freedom and human progress, produces great films/music/sportsmen etc. but has many arrogant people and - especially during the Bush presidency - sought to run roughshod over countries to pursue its geopolitical agenda.
I'm British btw.

I am from Croatia. A small country in Eastern Europe for which I am sure most Americans have never heard of.
People here generally think negatively of the USA because it is seen as the country of uneducated, ignorant, conservative and too patriotic people. I have an impression that most Americans are filled with information that they are living in the best country in the world by the media and that e.g. most people from Eastern Europe are living in trash cans. Media constantly forces the image of undeveloped countries in parts of the world where people are living actually pretty well.
I have met a couple of Americans and one of them was convinced Croatians don't know English at all because we are living in such a poor country and the other one thought we know everything about USA's history on his lecture. He must have thought we are learning everything about the USA here also.
Americans should stop being so introvert about their 'amazing country of freedom and opportunities' and acknowledge other parts of the world to see the beautiful cultures exist also outside of the USA.

I've heard of it if it makes you feel better. I know every country in Europe and can draw the region with borders without looking at a map

Its actually over 300 million, and I'm bound to lose? That makes it sound like your country has a higher concentration of those people. And have you been to the US? Because if you had you'll have a different opinion. All of the people who came from a different country in this thread have expressed how warming the country is, and is nothing like its painted in the media. It seems like you have been suckered into sensationalism media, don't talk **** about a country you haven't been too.

Actually, Machiavelli said hate over love, but I recognize your intent.

I've lived around the world and despite being a US citizen have spent less than 5 years in the States. The general consensus is that while America is a great place for opportunities (work-wise), the people are self-absorbed, uneducated, lazy, pompous and the government corrupt and so and and so forth.

But wouldn't you prefer to be the world's most powerful country and have everyone else like, or at least, respect, you?
Hint: the way to do that is not to go around boasting about how you're the world's most powerful country. It makes people think you're arrogant. There's no need to state something which is fairly obvious anyway.

Aren't the majority of whites in America descended from the Germans? Is there such a thing as American national? And do you automatically become American when you are born in America regardless of your race?

I consider myself a New Yorker before I consider myself an American. I mean, I know I'm both but New York is like a whole 'nother world compared to the rest of America.
As far as the country goes, if NY didn't exist, I would have left a long time ago. I much rather live somewhere like France or Spain or Hungary where there's far more cultural and more open minded people. And the men >>>>>
Anyway, looking at our country's history, it used to be an amazing place but now it's just a mess.

The only thing I have never gotten about the US, is that its nation built by immigrants yet they have some of the strongest immigration laws in the world. Sure some of that is because of terrorism, but not all of us are terrorists.
But overall I have a postive opinion about the US. Most Americans I've met are very kind and friendly.
