I try my best to avoid these debates because it gets really heated, and often people who have one opinion tend to stick to it.
But I agree with this, the only difference is that extremists derive the religion to cater to their own agenda of promoting violence. Having said that, religion is the tool that is used to get people to commit to doing these actions. I'm not implying religion is bad, but it can be dangerous when it is used in a manner that can make people breed hatred and violence against others.
I understand that it can be frustrating to be grouped together with these extremists considering their principle beliefs are different, but it's categorized as under the same religion which is why people tend to attack it as a whole. However, the root of the problem lies with the interpretation of religion itself due to the variations it can have from being peaceful and being violent.
RIP to the victims, what a tragedy.
